As I recall the INA troopers both shipments were in mufti attempting to pass as Merchant Seamen if intercepted. (Didn't work so well when the Brand II got boarded...)

Wait a second...recall something about TWO freighters flying either Norwegian or Swedish colors, dummy cargo of iron ore concealing smuggled personnel (The "Brand" and "Brand II") one of which did make it to the Far East, the second of which was intercepted... This I think was fr...

Sorry to have taken so long to get back to this thread... Well, you can call the person "Commander of a Century", or "Brigade-Leader" or "Brigade intendent", or for that matter whatever the exact euphemism was for Khmer Rouge in Kampuchea, etc... Point is, call them wha...

"Von Moltke" brings up a salient point, one relating to a phenomenon of Former Yugoslavia recent years regarding claims and counterclaims. Your two references, Pirx--perchance which purges was Andrei Vlassov chairman of military court in Leningrad? Officer Purge? NKVD purge? I have recentl...

Ost-Turkischen Waffenverbande, once again an ostensibly Muslim unit... Strangely, the most well-known / most impressive battle record -type Muslim unit with the German forces of WWII was 13th (Croatian/Bosnian) WSS "Handzar" (Usually spelled Handschar, but correct spelling in Croatian is H...

Keeping it simple is a VERY good idea.

(Right now I'm down to exactly THREE sites: Feldgrau, a WW1 re-enacting one, and a hunting / target shooting one)

{That keeps confusing overlaps to a minim, too!}

On Hlinka & Pawel202 & JP Slovjanski & me...

Sid: Might have been a sidebar note in some discussion Pawel 202 & THE YASA & I had going about Slavs on the Axis side...might also have been a thread the 3 of us East-Central European guys had on another Forum entirely w/r.t. Hlinka & then Tiso and whither Slovakia...sometimes it is REA...

You make a valid point, Graham... Sometimes it takes DECADES after all is said & done to sort things out. (And in some instances "unanticipated" conclusions get drawn. As in various discussions held here & elsewhere about Andrej Hlinka & Slovakia and Jure Francetic, Gde. Paveli...

Sid old bean: I take it you're referring to my 18th WSS versus 25th WSS cryptic reference. Here goes: (Main Source: Volume 3, Foreign volunteers of the German Army in WW2. One of Slovjanski's books, I forgot the Author & Publisher. Sorry) The intended "membership demographic" of 18th W...

(insert varminty "weeee-asel" noise here!)

Ferret: Skorzeny was Ethnic Hungarian. A Magyar from Vienna. Technically that's Uralic or Ural-Altaic. Since the modern term for what folks considered "Aryan" ethnolinguistically/ethnologically is an Indo-European... Seriously, JP Slovjanski (A Ukie and thusly a Slav) is a heck of a lot mo...

All sorts of Breakfast! Oatmeal! Eggs! Bacon! Biltong?

Agreed, Reb! (2nd Wehrmacht Panzer div "Vienna" also sounds like an intriguing book) The "less classic" SS div's tended not to show up as often to the REALLY interesting battles (a noteable exception being 17th SS Pz. Gotz von Berlichingen) Such as 14th WSS Galicia's big noteable...

Please, no more ''Das Reich" histories!

Sid: Since the WSS page here gets the most hits, (and I suppose Kreigsmarine got the lowest? :? ) I have a question--perhaps not so easily answered about same: Feldgrau here has a topic area of "Foreign Volunteers", which does have some overlap with WSS in that starting at division #13, an...

Yerger's made a valid point w/r.t. SOME areas not being covered. (I'm going to repeat myself here, but George Lepre's Himmler's Bosnian Divisions of recent vintage being prety much the best work out there on "Handschar" division, and perhaps the only work dealing with "Kama" and ...

Yes, Pirx--

For after all, Iosif Dzugashvili (Stalin) was such a paragon of moral virtue (Didn't he rack up at least as high, if not higher body count than Hitler???)

And let us not forget Lavrenti'i Beria (When not running the Cheka/NKVD, he was molesting little kids!)

Nor I, gents. (Just trying to remind all present that Nat'l Socialist Germany--or the rest of the Axis allies--didn't have a monopoly on atrocity counts on the Eastfront. Soviet Forces and Tito Partizans did so too.) I'm not going to go any further, I've said all I need to on this thread. (BTW, you ...
