Thanks for the info.
As Graf Spee was operatioal in Spanish waters prior to the Spithead review it seems most likely that she visited Dublin on her was back to Keil.
Thanks again.

Graf Spee question
When I was a child, living in Dublin, Eire I can remember being taken by my parents to visit the KMS Graf Spee which was on a courtesy visit. It would have been about 1937 -38. I remember that we boarded using the port quarter gangway and for some years afterwards I had a diary with several of the c...

Gerd von Rundstedt
Hello Gareth, Thanks for the info and for the additional information on "Being allowed to carry the uniform" I'd not heard of that before. If Rundstedt was wearing his "General Staff" FMs uniform with the GS collar tabs would he have the white edging (Waffenfarb) as per the Infan...

F M Gerd von Rundstedt
Greetings, Most photos of F M von Rundstedt show him wearing the collar tabs of, I think, an officer of infantry rather than the usual General Staff insignia. I beleive this was because he was Colonel in Chief of a regiment, (18th Infantry Regt.?). Can anyone expand of this for me? Surely other Gene...

British Army in France 1940
Greetings, An interesting tale told to me by my fencing instructor. He served with the Royal Tank Regiment during WW2. He related how in 1940 on hearing that his unit was to go to France all the crews, with the exception of the drivers, were sent to Southhampton to be ferried to France. The Tanks we...

Hello,
The Royal Air Force was inaugurated in it's own right and combined both the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service.

The 'Royal Army'
Granted, but the Appelation 'Royal' is never applied to the British army as a whole.

Britische Frikorps
Hello, Much has been made about the Britische Frikorps but in fact it never ammounted to a large number, estimates vary from as few as a dozen to 40 or 50 individuals. The problem was that because there were so few they could not be formed as a separate unit and they themselves became very disgruntl...

Thr "Royal Army"
Greetings, I notice both here and in other forums elsewhere that many of our non British correspondents refer, mistakenly, to the Royal Army of Britian. Curiously whilst we do have a Royal Air Force and Royal Navy we don't have a Royal Army. The army itself it made up of many regiments many of whom ...

3rd Inf Div
Hello,
Further to my remarks re the 3rd Inf Div. It comes to me that if the colours are reversed, 3 red triangles around a black one then that is the Divisional sign of the Wehrmacht 183rd Inf Div.

The Norden Bombsight and USAF Tactics in WW2
Greetings, Let me state from the start I have no facts, only hearsay and "Everyone knows that---" I joined the Royal Air Force in 1949 and can well remember the quote regarding the USAF Norden bombsight "Hit a pickle barrel from 20000ft". Was the legendary accuracy of this sight ...

Divisional Signs
Hello again, The Divisional sign of the 50th Division is a black square upon which are two red, capital letter Ts one slightly to the right and lower than the first. The left arm of the horizontal bar of the lower T crossing the middle of the vertical bar of the other T. Each T is about 3/4 of the h...

British Divisonal Insignia
Hello, The divisional sign of the 3rd Infantry division was a black triangle point uppermost upon which was superimposed a red triangle point downward it's corners touching the larger triangle. Or to put it another way. A red triangle point down surrounded by 3 black ones. I have a vauge feeling tha...

Cuff Bands
Greetings, This is my first post so if I am doing somthing wrong please tell me. I have a book " German Infantryman at War 1939-1945" by George Forty and published by Ian Allan 2002. In it on pages 35, 69 and 93 are photos showing infantrymen wearing plain white/silver pairs of bands on bo...
