Jason When my long time friend and companion (15 yrs) Molly died the most astonishing thing happened. At least four different neighborhood cats came to visit us and I suppose, offer their condolances. I've truly never seen anything like it. Molly was a house cat so how could they have known? they'd ...

Ogiwan Respectfully, "but caused a small fraction of actual casulties," is probably not accurate - at least for the Western Front in '44. In Normandy the Brits attributed 70% of their casualties to "mortars." (with them that seems to include mortars and werfers so there may be so...

Burning Mountain is well worth the read! Fatherland? I just finished it. Very well done but damn...it gave me the creeps. I'd never really considered how creepy the 3rd Reich would be twenty or thirty years on...but this guy made his assumptions based on sound knowledge of history. I'd always assume...

I quite enjoyed the pictures. And please don't take offense at my silly generalizations.

To all - I will set myself a proper penance and soon as a little extra money comes my way I sentence myself to get "A cliff in the Ocean" and get more up to speed on TDiv.

cheers

Gentlemen A collegue and I used to occassionally play a game we called "spot the bad guy" - we'd stand in a parking lot at rush hour and each silently pick drivers we thought we'd er, find interesting... The interesting part was we agreed better than 80% of the time. There's a look... Weth...

Erik Not a contradiction at all. "The Dirty Dozen" is a figment of some screen writer's imagination. The best people make the best soldiers, and the best of the best seem to be from a rural or agricultural background although to my own surprise (excuse my southern prejudice here) I find th...

John I'd guess the guys you met were not from the original Totenkopfverbande then. In my thugs comment I'm perhaps leaning a bit on my police academy and private security background - in the early photos of TDiv I have to say - many of them were exactly the kind of guys I'd give a second look were I...

John In the majority of pictures I've seen of T-Div people one or more usually more, looked to me like thugs. Very much people not the kind of guys that make recruiters swoon. 8) Their origin suggests that they were in fact thugs, although by midwar the whole div had no doubt turned over. Yet they s...

I'm always a little worried that people want to take my guns away. Why would they? I've never shot anyone (in civilian life) and my weapons are a very necessary sort of "reset button" on the consitution. Can't be free if you are unarmed and your masters are armed. In the US its supposed to...

I work with an ex-pat Russian Jew who told me recently that it was "refreshing" to talk to me because I'm not uptight and say what I really think. I took it first as a complement then I realized how scary that sentence is. Its even scarier when we realize that this terrifying political cor...

Nice pictures. Funny how T Div men look. You can spot those guys easily in an uncaptioned photo. That gleam in their eye is not the gleam of idealism you see in some troops faces... they look like thugs to me. I've never figured out how guys like that could be good soldiers but they apparently were....

Thanks Dr. K. This fellow takesme back to the new Max Hastings book I just read - "Warriors." Hastings, who is anything but anti-warrior, notes that such men (like our friend in the photo) often have a great deal of trouble adjusting to peace. I imagine after earning the RK and 4 tank dest...

I paid 20.00 for it but would have paid 50.00 without blinking. Info on III Pz Korps is always a footnote in accounts of Kursk. This is excellent. I'd recommend it highly - didn't find the text that bad - of course I've only read it twice (had it a month) 8) I had no idea, for instance, that Hunersd...
