Initially they wore their trousers over the standard jackboot - there were drawstrings at the bottom to 'blouse' the trousers over the boots. Later they were issued lowboots but they did not apparently wear the gaiters as a norm. Information from the Osprey title 'Panzer Divisions'

Unfortunately he did get involved in the Third Reich - he was a high-ranking officer in the nazi-gestated Luftwaffe! He was also partly responsible for the rise of that arm to become the terror of many a civilian in the period 1939-41. Udet strikes me as a fantasist who wanted war to be some sort of...

I believe Roosevelt, jokingly, said: "why not 100,000?" indicating that it wasn't ever going to be a serious discussion.

I did see some grey roll-necks the last time I was in in H&M with her indoors, but whether they go up to 45" chest...most of their stuff seems to be for teenage beanpoles.

The Germans certainly did deface and/or destroy Allied memorials from WWI but, as i have said, it was usually due to what they perceived as insulting inscriptions (how would you like to have your fallen comrades called brutes or a barbarians?). I'm not making this up. Many guide books to WWI battlef...

Some memorials were defaced or destroyed by the Germans if they felt they gave offence to them. A lot of British graveyards were tended by ex-Tommies from WWI who, one assumes, would either leave France and Belgium or end up being interned.

As for the man who ended Wittmann's life, well he WAS merely a lowly gunner but has quite rightly been credited not just with the destruction of Wittmann's Tiger but two others in the same action. So, step forward Trooper Joe Elkins of the 1st Northants Yeomanry.

I can't magine the US allowing their top space scientist being put on trial due to a bunch of French (probably commie, too) allegations. But, one of Von Braun's fellow V2 scientists, Arthur Rudolf, who designed the Saturn V rocket that got the US to the moon, was actually extradited to Germany in th...

The whitewashing of Von Braun wasn't done by himself or the Germans - it was done by the Americans; Of course it was done by the Americans. They wanted and needed these "experts" in their field working for them. Better "they" have been acquired by the Americans than the Russians...

Well I imagine that the Italians were not involved in a fighting retreat and had the time to do what you suggest. Did the DLI have the time to kill 400? Aside from anything else, I just can't honestly see any way that 400 soldiers - most of whom would be fit, trained, aggressive young men - could be...

How do you arrange the elimination of 400 men exactly? The SS troops would have either have had to have been killed in small batches (and without alerting the other prisoners to their fate) which would have taken a fairly long time in a period when the DLI were falling back or they would have had to...

Apparently, the troublesome Brewster factory was taken over by the US Navy in 1942 - prior to Corsair F3A-1 production starting, but it seems the problems didn't end there as the contract was cancelled in 1944 - after less than one year of production and in the middle of the war! Whether the aircraf...

As I understand it, the USMC did continue sniper training between the wars but not the US Army. The British had very effective snipers in WWI (eventually) using special units such as the Lovat Scouts (the ghillie suit being one of their innovations), but in WWII they were used for the occupation of ...
