Woolston
I met a lady a few years ago, who amazed me. She was working in the V-Supermarine factory in Woolston and when the bombing was under way on one occasion was away from the building and got down on the ground with another girl of about 16 who also worked there. There was no cover so they hid under a c...

Book
Have a look at GENERAL MOTORS AND THE NAZIS by Prof Henry Ashby Turner of Yale. I contributed some info to it. The simple answer is that there was no choice in the matter as GM had no control, although the position was broadly the same with Ford Werke AG in Koln. The Blitz trucks were sold here in t...

Shotguns
My late father-in-law was a dab hand at shooting, with rifle or shotgun. During the war he sued to borrow a .22 riifle when on leave to shoot rabbits and rooks for dinner. However he said that the RAF guys were encouraged to use shotguns as it taught them/ gave practice in deflection shooting.

NCO rear gunner
My father's boss was a Warrant Officer rear gunner, and was offered a commission but turned it down as he preferred being the top dog in the Sergeants' Mess than being bottom dog in the Officers' Mess! My late father-in-law was in the Empire training scheme in Canada, being selected for pilot traini...

Western blocs
Well it used to be that Cyoprus voted for Greece, and vice versa (to groans), and I believe Scandinavian countries may have votd for each other though not for Norway! However over the Gulf War we got excluded totally. Nil points! The auto finalists were deemed by Eurovisian to have won enough in the...

Eh?
I regret to say that the impression you got is outmoded. I was involved in the post-1971 Referendum when we voted to join the then EEC. I personally am a Francophile. As well as a deep respecter of Canada, Australia and New Zealand. We in the UK are indeed European, but just as your wonderful countr...

British songs
We chose "Europap", that is songs that would appeal to Europeans, or did...BOOM-BANG-A-bang by Lulu being a prime example. Whst we like as Brits is not the same as what we think is going to appeal to the rest of Europe. And if you think that we have not tried a British band, we have, THE S...

....which..
...led to the famous FATHER TED episode where Father Ted was chosen to represent Eire/Ireland, on the basis that he would not win and thus save them from huge expenditure again! We cannot ever win now, and to cap it all after making fun of Norge's/Norway's "nil points" it happened to us! I...

I can remember watching British winners back as far as Sandy Shore's PUPPET ON A STRING, when she performed barefoot. I know a huge chunk of our 60 million citizens wonder why we bother to take part now. We'll never win it again now as the blocs will all favour each other and we aren't in any! And w...

Thoughts
Hospitals tended to be large, old buildings at the time and therefore a nice landmark to aim for. Of course it would surely be the Docks, as with Goole, plus the canals and railway sidings that would be the ideal target.

Answer
The simple answer is that they bought O.S. maps, road maps, and town plans directly from London shops! No doubt pre-war German motorign organisations acquired road maps of the UK produced by the AA and RAC. I know of several German officials that met British counterparts in London, and there were al...

Book?
Yes there was at least one book and I have read it. It gives the complete story of the B-25's journey and the crew and passengers. It also mentions what happened to the elevator and the engines, etc. http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=179 The Sky is Falling: July 28, 1945, a Twin Engine B-25 Army Bom...

General Motors evacuation 1940
I do not know if this is of interest but just in case it is from the General Motors Overseas Operations magazine, July 1940: On Friday, 21 June 1940, the S.S. Washington with 1,793 evacuees “crowded to the rails” from Bordeaux, Lisbon and Galway in Ireland, arrived at the North Pier in New York Harb...

Thank you!
My special interest, as a resident of Southampton, is the local military history. I came over a few years back to Jersey with my wife and family and we found it fascinating then. After that I acquired a few books on the occupation and when we come over again will come and see what changes have taken...

Irishmen in the Battle of Berlin?
Famous film and TV actor Sam Kydd wrote his autobiography about his volunteering for the British Army and his capture in 1940, He stated that when he was a POW those Irishment who wanted to could be repatriated as neutrals,, but none did. Also that an American in German uniform came round and tried ...
