Panther tank question
What is the cylinder on the side of the hull of the tank? I've been told it is an auxiliary fuel tank alternatively I've been told it is the container for the cleaning rod poles for the main gun.

Company commanders
Liam posted earlier that captains were usually company commanders. I had understood that normally Majors command companies. At least I know this is the case in the modern British Army. Was this not the same for WWII?

Shell comparison
Hello David,
That is interesting information. It would seem that depending on the amount of explosive in the shell the 75mm types might vary in effectiveness by as much as 50%.

infantry guns & artillery pieces
Thanks Matt,
So it is a safe assumption that the effectiveness of the shells from the infantry guns were similar to those of the same caliber light and medium artillery pieces?

regimental companies
Roger,
I seem to remember you responding on another thread that the panzergrenadier regimental pioneer company of the armored panzergrenadier regiment had one SPW equipped platoon and two truck mounted platoons. Is that correct or was it two SPW platoons and one truck mounted platoon?
thanks,
Jeff

82nd & panzerfaust
The note I have is that the 82nd used them in Market Garden from a supply captured in Sicily. I'd surmise that means they used them in D-Day but don't have anything that says they directly did so. It should be noted that many U.S. units used panzerfaust recovered from the battlefield (the ones in Si...

Comparison of effectiveness of infantry guns & artillery
From the German Army Handbook I see that there was a slight difference in the weight of shell used by the 75mm infantry gun and the 75mm light artillery piece as well as between shells of the 150mm infantry gun and the 150mm medium gun. What was the comparative effectiveness between the shells of si...

From H.W. Schmidt
The account of an officer who was part of that unit. The men were not 'Marines.' The civilian crews of several German ships trapped in waters off the Italian East African coast formed themselves into a volunteer company of infantry. They were armed and equipped by the Italians but had Swastica flash...

Russian manpower
It was not endless. The USSR had reached the bottom of its manpower resources by 1945. Replacements by mid '45 were far fewer in numbers and poor in quality (with the best going to the many Guards divisions). The decline in manpower and quality led to the breakdown in discipline the Soviet Army show...

From my previous post (earlier in the thread) USMC in War on Germany and Italy Shipboard detachments of Marines served throughout the landings in North Africa, the Mediterranean and the Normandy invasion as gun crews aboard battleships and cruisers. A 200-man detachment was normally carried aboard a...

Q on right rear periscope
Was the periscope in the right rear of the fighting compartment also a rotating periscope. By the way it looks on my model it appears that is should but it doesn't appear identical to the commander's periscope.

Regimental companies of Pzgr regiments
Was there any difference in the equipment of the regimental pioneer and infantry gun companies between the (regular Army) armored panzergrenadier regiment and the motorized panzergrenadier regiment? Did the pioneer company of the armored pzgr reg have its platoons equipped with SPWs? Was the infantr...

82nd Abn
82nd Abn Div captured a supply of panzerfausts in Sicily which lasted until Market Garden. These were supplemented by smaller subsequent captures.
