Re: panzerschrek in Type 44 pz. div.

This topic has also been puzzling me. Apart from the reason mentioned by Martin Block, which is most likely the main one, and next to Piet's suggestion, there are other possible explanations for the temporary 'disappearance' of the Panzerschreck in the 1944 KStN of the Panzergrenadiere. However, the...

Re: 1560 Art. Regt, 560 VG in the Ardennes

There's very little on 560. VGD in the German Archives; no KTB survived. I have scans of the LVIII. Pz.Korps files, but sadly not all accompanying maps were scanned because they have been moved to separate folders for better conservation. Archival reference notes (scanned along with the files) do ho...

Wehrkreise and (Ersatz-)personnel for field units, late-war

Hi all, Field units were each assigned to a Wehrkreis of the Ersatzheer which was to train and deliver the replacements for that unit. Every now and then, replacements and/or recovered would be sent from the Wehrkreis to the frontline units in Marschbataillone (or marching units of other sizes). Tha...

Re: NARA Records Now Available on DVD Media

Hi all, Today I had an unpleasant surprise. A dvd with a microfilm reproduction arrived from NARA. However, the dvd was empty. It had the label, but no content at all. Something obviously must have gone wrong. Any of you had this happen before? Did NARA solve it easily? Considering the price, it's r...

Hi again, A giant leap from tactics to the grand strategic level! :D Actually, I shy away from what-if scenarios. Since all historical conditions and causalities are interrelated, trying to come to a satisfying conclusion is impossible. It's almost like trying to predict the future, and we're alread...

Do you think that the german army of 1940 would have had more success (armed with 44 quality equipment)?? What-ifs are always tricky... We're talking about infantry tactics, so better trained or more experienced soldiers, NCOs and lower cadre officers, similar to earlier in the War, would obviously...

Hi, Or was it simply down to the poor quality of the 1944 german army?? You basically answered your own question. Firstly, to overcome the ever-increasing demand in manpower in combat units, which reached a climax after the losses sustained during the Summer of 1944, the training period of recruits ...

Hi Jan-Hendrik,

I was wondering how much the content in the books differs from the content of the online PDF-publications on the divisions? Does it contain roughly the same or much more information?

Thanks in advance.

Hans and Piet, Thanks a lot for your in-depth replies. It appears to me you both approach the questions from a different angle, but both answers don't rule eachother out. After all, the 'Panzer-Division 44' organisation was the fruit of all tactical and operational experiences of nearly 5 years of w...

Trying to find an answer to my own second question, I think of the following: Men, weapons and/or vehicles of a Stabs-Kp. are generaly less susceptible to being detached to other units, when compared to those of 'line'-companies. So the move of the schwere Panzerspähwagen to the Stabs-Kompanie might...

Reb, Thanks for joining in and drawing attention to the topic. Of course I know the actual available equipment would vary from unit to unit. As Hans wrote, Schwimmwagen or Kübelwagen coys were a left-over from the former Kradschützen, but in 1944 in theory they were dropped for the Pz.Aufkl.Abt. wit...

Bringing this interesting topic back from the Feldgrau archives, I wonder if someone has any idea on the following: The 1944 establishment of the Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung called for two 'armoured reconnaissance infantry' companies. The first one, the battalion's 2. Kp., was to be equipped with t...

Richard, (o) = 'ortsfest': means the unit is not meant to be transported. (v) = 'verlegbar': means the unit can be moved, but by means of a non-organic transport material. It's a bit weird to see these suffixes for units which are placed under a motorised HQ, so I wonder if these were still correct ...
