SS Ranks

As you all probably know, there was no rank in the SS equivalent to that of Field Marshall. Obviously Himmler was Reichfuhrer-SS, equivalent in rank to Reichmarshall Goering, but beneath him there was only the rank of SS-Oberstgruppenfuhrer. Why was this? Also what would the equivalent rank of Field...

I agree with Sid. The Nazis, despite all there pomp and circumstance were a pretty mediocre bunch, and perhaps there elaborate uniforms were a way of covering up their shortcomings. As I mentioned earlier Reichmarshall Goering in his full dress, lit up like a christmas tree would have been a ridculo...

Bittrich

This I feel was also out of Bittrich's respect for the British paratroopers. Bittrich also said at the time that he had never seen enemy soldiers fight so hard.

Heinz, What exactly constistutes a coward in your eyes? Is it someone is a realist, someone who recognises the impossible odds that are stacked against him. Someone who has to overturn a whole system of loyalty that had been instilled in him since birth, to act out of a greater feeling of loyalty to...

Goering in full dress uniform must have been a sight to see. Although you probably would have had to have worn sunglasses to stop yourself being dazzled by all hi medals.

Rommel was the battlefront general of the WWII [/i]par excellance . Rommel posessed an extrodinary fingerspitzengefuhl , a sense of the battlefield that most of the plodding staff officers of the general staff never had. Let us also not forget the speed with which he mastered the elements of modern ...

Thank you Timo. Unfortunately my German goes no further than "bitte" and "danke", so if there's anybody that can give me some biographical details in English, I would be very grateful.

Willi Bittrich

Hello, During Operation Market Garden Bittrich commanded II-SS Panzer Corps. Before this he was a divisional commander. Can anyone out there give me more of a biographical details? Also, Bittrich seems to have been one of the more military (as opposed to political) soldiers in the SS, one forum memb...

SS-Division Charlemagne

Hello, I am doing some research on French collaboration during WWII, and from previously reading about the Battle of Berlin, the Charlemagne division pops up frequently in accounts of the battle. My understanding is that it was formed mainly of die-hard anti-Communists and French nationalists from t...
