@halder: This "the Reich started the war" or even "Hitler started the war" are eseentially myths. Especially in their "they/he did it completely alone, no one else was responsible and only they are to blame" versions. No. This simply not what happened. Fact is that the ...

Halder wrote: It's difficult for an Englishman born 30 years after the war to understand why Hitler could inspire the senior generals, particularly after Stalingrad. He comes across as irresponsibly stubborn, immovable, irrational; above all, not a leader to be followed. To put Pflicht before Volk s...

@Helmut v M. I think that the article you posted is right on the mark. It is my opinion that especially American intervention into the European wars should be seen far more critical than they generally are. Instead they are heroized and mystified, the soldiers are declared heroes just because of bei...

@PaulJ: You are right. German licence plates start with a one to three letters long code designating the town or "Kreis" (district or county) the car is from. (After that comes a code usually consisting of more letters and numbers, but that is purely random). "B" for Berlin, &quo...

Last but not least, is the MG3 still serving? Hey, I had overlooked that question. Rest assured, the MG-3 is alive and well. MG-4 notwithstanding, the MG-3 is still used. One also can see it very often as a mounted weapon on helicopters, ground vehicles and ships. It will continue to stay ar...

[OFFTOPIC]I must say, I hate barrets as well always having preferred the simple fieldcap. But according to some myth, barrets do look good. I really wonder who has managed to convince so many military organisations of that nonsense.[/OFFTOPIC]

@maschinengewehr42: The "(fairly) new German assault rifle in 5.56mm calibre that was to replace the G3 " is called G36 (made by Heckler&Koch) and has fully replaced the its predecessor by now: http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/8325/idz5mg4.th.png Of course it is also used in Afghanista...

Panzer Lehr was what could perhaps be called the first truly modern armored division. Actually, if one wants to know which single division in WWII (of all sides) had the most potential combat power, I would suspect Panzer Lehr could well be the answer. In its prime (it was later completely rebuild a...

All this talk about the German insensibility and latent rascist attitude towards Poles reminds me how far we still have to go. Torquez is absolutely right, we Germans still have trouble to understand our eastern neighbours. They chasm dividing us may still be too wide. For example, it is still a big...

Torquez...it had been quite silent from you corner after Poland had lost against Germany - a from my part very much welcomed side effect of that game. That seems now to have changed, which in turn is another reason to regret this present defeat of the German team. "Hitler kaput"? Well yes,...

@Christian: The German team has to beat the Italians first. Do you know how often an German-Italian match ended in a victory for Germany in a World or European Cup? Never, ever! And a few months back virtually this German team played against basically the present Italian team...and lost 4:1 ! ( @{ !...
