Thanks - much appreciated. The soldier was Herman Mittag, an NCO (photo below). He was born in Reichenau, Saxony. He is buried in Rossoschka.

Based on this I would assume he was KIA from artillery fire. Does that make sense?

Thanks for that information. Based on the units in the area I assumed 29th or 94th. Given he was from Saxony, that makes sense. What is a good reference for better understanding the action in that time and place?

Thanks for info! I have found many cases of German place names that don't match what they are called locally. Based on the the date and place of his death, I assume he was in either the 29th ID (motorized) or the 94th ID.
