Re: Review: A Better Comrade You Will Never Find

I picked up this book last year, but have only flipped through it. I liked the painting on the cover... As I started reading through it, the one thing that struck me was some of the attention to little details - nicknames for things, stuff of that nature. It seemed quite "authentic" in tha...

Re: Question on Kurowski's book "Battleground Italy 1943 -

I see this is well over 5 years old now, so I trust my answer will be irrelevant, but I'd like to discuss the book anyway. I just picked this up and was extremely disappointed with the content. I suppose I should know better than to buy a book in shrink wrap, but Zetterling's book on German Forces i...

Re: Last Post MWO Heinz Winkel - SS Fallschirmjäger Bataillon500

Hi, I'm one of Heinz Winkels distant relatives and have been working with his one daughter to confirm information about his service during WWII. So far I can confirm, with a document i received from Germany, that he was indeed in 1kp. SS Fallschirmjäger Bataillon 500. For the last month before he w...

Re: Stalingrad battle - 3D Mamaev Kurgan B&W Preview

Realizing full well this has been bumped after three years but posting anyway, I have to ask... If this was truly "1:1" scale, wouldn't that mean that such detail as doorknobs, hinges, steps, individual sidewalk panels, cobblestones, etc. be included? I see no evidence that this model will...

Fresh rations where possible; the Nahkampfpackchen was developed later in the war as a "close combat" meal. There were also Iron Rations in full and half portions. A good, if brief, look at this is the book GERMANY ARMY EQUIPMENT by Rottman and Volstad, part of the Osprey Men-at-Arms serie...

Armoured Reconnaissance Battalion rank titles and awards

Quick question to which a search did not yield quick answers. After the 1942 honour titles were granted, what was a private soldier in an armoured reconnaissance battalion called? Schütze? Grenadier? Which type of assault badge would an armoured reconnaissance battalion soldier be entitled to? Bronz...

What is a "blitzkrieg tactic"? I thought the term - even in its commonly used, incorrect form - refered to operational level concepts... :)

Still, the cover has a nice picture on it.

Hello Reb! 27 Armoured Regiment (Sherbrooke Fusiliers) Annoying point of order. There was no such regiment. The correct title - as Brian Reid takes pains to point out in NO HOLDING BACK - was The Sherbrooke Fusilier Regiment. No "s". I regret I have nothing substantive to add to this othe...

As for Mohnke, I've been collecting some info on him for my own website - his depiction in Der Untergang was certainly interesting. http://www.canadiansoldiers.com/mediawiki-1.5.5/index.php?title=Brigadef%C3%BChrer_Wilhelm_Mohnke Margolian presents him as a drug-addicted near psychopath whom even Wa...

Ouch. Reb heehee In Canada we call the MAG the C6, but that probably isn't of interest to anyone either. :) Not trying to be a dick (well, not really, really trying), I'm just sayin' - y'know? Belt fed vs. Mag fed is really meaningless unless you're going to put it into context. The British based t...

Michael Sid and I were discussing weapons we've actually used in live tactical situations - and what we liked as a result. Both of us have actually used the Bren for example, on ops. When I say I like the RPK its because I looked at what was available and it suited my purposes best. cheers Reb[/b] ...

Calibres not the answer

Weapons don't exist in vacuums, guys. They are developed to suit the tactics in which they are employed. Don't buy into the game of comparing gross weith, bore diameters and muzzle velocities. Look at how these weapons were designed to be employed instead. If you don't know anything about how each n...

I think that in the case of officers actually serving in Panzer Regiments, it may have simply been a case of personal preference. The higher in rank you were - and the longer you were in the field - the more choices you could tend to get away with.
