thats the great advantage of the german language you can create new words and every mothertongue knows what is meant by it. On the other hand even a native spaeker can not explain how it works ...

nop, in this case you must read the whole sentence, so he tells that they were under the clouds which were overhauling them: hinweg unter uns überholenden Wolken... away, under clouds which were overhauling us...

Seems that the is a simple misspelling, must be:" In Regenböe achtern Geschütz gesehen". > in rain flaw at the Backside of the ship seen something, expected to be a gun. Does this make sense to you?
