I have to disagree somewhat with you comment about adapting an obsolete tank. The figure about the Grille and Panzerjäger 38(t) are misleading in that respect. The early Grille and Panzerjäger 38(t) were just conversions on the original chassis. Later versions with the setback guns and redesigned su...

To all; Thanks, Rik, and I also received an email from Mike Pruett. I had totally misinterpreted the photos I had looked at of the Doppellitzen on the feld grau uniforms. The black underlay is obviously dark blue green, not black as I thought. Here's Mikes info: Concerning the wear of Doppellitzen o...

Rikster;

Thank you, and please contribute any info this gentleman may have.

Again, if you do have info that documents Panzers in Panzerpioniere units before 1940 please post that also.

No, they were not claret. They were hochrot, or bright red, the same as the underlay on their collar and shoulder boards. In 1944 it was authorized that Generals of specialist careers were able to wear the specialist Waffenfarbe color underlay under their collar, cuff and shoulder boards but the oth...

Nope, no Waffenfarbe piping on these collar patches. Just the doppellitzen embroidered on black patches. Black Waffenfarbe piping on the shoulder boards. That's correct. HM. 40, Nr. 624, dated May 10, 1940 authorized the issue of the black Panzer uniform to Panzerpionere operating Panzers, so the &q...

While most of the photos show the feldgrau collar patches, it's difficult to make out the shoulder boards but two photos do show the feldgrau boards. In Italy the 16th wore tropical uniforms with Litzen on black underlay, no twisted piping on the tropicals. On the standard service uniform, dark gree...

Rikster; I beg your pardon, but I would suggest you re-read my post a little more carefully: "After 1940 as Panzers began to be assigned to Heer Panzerpioner units and these crews traded in their pink Waffenfarbe they began to wear the twisted Waffenfarbe so it would show on the black Panzer wr...

Hi David,

Didn't say they did. I just had this info all together and chunked it into my answer without editing thinking the Ardennes stuff would be of interest.

Here is the best information I have gathered on the Puma. Most comes from Jentz' work and James Blackwell's research: 25 to 1.Kompanie/Pz.Afkl.Abt.130 of Panzer Lehr Div. 25 to 1.Kompanie/Pz.Afkl.Abt.2. of 2.Panzer Div. 16 to Pz.Afkl.Abt.20 of 20.Pz.Div. 6 to 1.Kompanie/Pz.Afkl.7 of 7.Pz.Div. 16 to ...

I agree with Chris except for one small detail. Andrew Mollo in UNIFORMS OF THE WAFFEN-SS VOLUME 7 WAFFEN-SS BADGES AND UNITS DISTINCTIONS 1939-1945 echoes Angolia's information but states photographic evidence indicates that the practice continued beyond the May, 1940 discontinuance date well into ...

This question is unanswerable without further info from Jagerbecker. Do you mean the SS Totenkopf or the Heer Panzer Totenkopf. At which troops are you looking?

A good answer depends on whether they are Waffen-SS or Heer Panzertruppen.

David, have to compiment you on your info. But, having The Combat History of sPzJgAbt 654, I have to disagree with some of your data. Sometime after Sept. 43 5 Panthers Ausf A and 3 Bergepanthers As of 1 June. 1944 4 Panthers and 1 Bergepanther On 1 June, 1944 issued 5 Jagdpanthers that you do not l...

Michael; No, I don't mean SPW's, I mean "Panzers". All seriousness aside, yes the Panzerpioner-Abt and -Btl were equipped with Panzers. Usually it was the outdated Pzkpfw I's and II's, but by later in the war Panzerpioner-Btl. 16 in Italy had Pzkpfw IV Ausf G's assigned to it. Another comm...

The wear of black\white or black\silver Waffenfarbe for Panzerpionere was only in the Waffen-SS up to 1940 because it was a carry-over from the old SS piping. No Heer units doing it. After 1940 as Panzers began to be assigned to Heer Panzerpioner units and these crews traded in their pink Waffenfarb...
