Hi Bladerunner
many thanks for the information. Do you have a particular source for this material. I am very interested in Von Oppen's activities during the latter stages of the war, as I understand he took a key role in minimizing damage and fatalities....

Cheers

18th SS Armee Korps - 1945

Hi
I am looking for information on this unit, which was in the South West of Germany (Freiberg - Blackforest region) at the end of the war, in particular any information on General Rudolf von Oppen.
Many thanks

In the Armee-Tagesbefehl dated 9 April 1944 (Easter Sunday) Hube writes:

Es wurden erbeutet, oder venichtet: nach bisherigen Zahlungen 358 Panzer, 190 Geschutze, 29 Sturmgeschutze, 4 Sfl, 2Spw, 57 Panzerbuschen, 174 MG, und zahlreichen Handfeuerwaffen.

Hi Sid
Sorry to be so late in replying to your question (Jan) re Fromm. The references imply he was involved in the political wrangling and in conflict at times with Dornberger. There is no obvious reference about his direct involvement in the development side.
Cheers

Hi The book "V2" by Major Walter Dornberger (first published in England 1952) is very interesting reading. Dornberger was in charge of research and development of liquid-propellant rockets at Peenemunde. He highlights the internal political wrangling for power, which had a hugh detrimental...

Hi One of the difficulties of translating German, is that often words are written together. Seitengewehr means side-arm or bayonet. Scheide means sheath (it can also mean the female anatomy!). I would therefore assume it is the sheath or cover of a bayonet, that would hang from the soldier (on the s...

Heeres Standort Verwaltung

Hi I know this means Garrison Administration. Perhaps someone could answer the following questions for me please: If someone was "in charge" of the garrison, what would their title have been? Their responsibilities? Who would they have been accountable to? Are there any publications - sour...

Hi
The word "wacht" can be misleading!
Wachtdienst: Guard Duty
Wachtposten: Sentry

However a Wachtmeister is a Sergeant (of a Mounted Unit).

Hope this helps

Hi Some of Werner Haupt's books are translations. "Assault on Moscow 1942" is a translation of the original book published in 1941. I was curious initially as to why there were no references/bibliography - because it is a translation! I believe the original book was written from experience...
