Of course I am on occasions guilty of sloppy and imprecise phraseology. Such things inevitably occur because we have limited space on Feldgrau. It is therefore necessary to refine what one means if challenged. This is right, not wrong. I would recommend it to you My view on this is as follows: if o...

As a matter of interest, what were the four Polish ports other than Gdynia which you mentioned earlier? could you please be a bit more careful when reading people who correspond with you, and could you please stop distorting what they wrote? I wrote "Gdynia was not Poland’s only port – there w...

If the French target was the Ruhr region, then they had to break the resistance of twelve first rate German divisions false. First rate divisions were in Poland at that time. These in the West were not only not first-rate, but also incomplete and twice as many others most of them incomplete breach ...

Sid, Whenever you make a blunder due to your loose, misleading, obscure wording (I do not dare to suspect ignorance), than you refine your statement so that the definiton is narrowed in a very particular way, namely to fit your allegations. You write “German ports” – but what you actually mean is “p...

Sid, 1. To start with the basics again. I am amazed to see how much nonsence one can put in a single paragraph, namely “We can be absolutely sure that Gdynia was Poland's last port to fall because it was Poland's ONLY port. Poland had to build Gdynia almost from scratch between the wars into a city ...

Pipes: 90.000 KIA

Richard Pipes claims in his recent book ("Vixi") that the German losses were 90.000 KIA. I have discussed this number in a separate thread (see the Books section).

Sid, 1. first, please let me start with the basics. You ask “when WAS Warsaw surrounded”. Certainly not on Sep 18, as you falsely allege. As late as Sep 19 the Warsaw garrison was still in contact with the troops fleeing from the Bzura pocket. I would point to Sep 20 as the day that the capital was ...

Sid, many thanks for the source on the French divisions, which seems to explain the difference between their different types. I presume this is also the source of your claim that “Only about thirty French divisions were first line Active divisions”. If your claim is correct (and I have no reason to ...

Only about thirty French divisions were first line Active divisions (equivalent to the German Welle 1) a source please? Your timetable for "Karlsruhe on day 2 etc." is complete fantasy of course it is. This is the point. French Plan E did not envisage anything like that speed of advance.....

what could have been saved

Certainly an offensive by the French couldn't have saved Poland, but it might have dictated the terms on which the Germans first committed their forces returning from the east. I would guess that the Germans were probably not in a position to over run France in the winter of 1939-40, but they could...

46.000 KIA in Fall Gelb

Sid, Patrick, thanks. This is more less in line with my expectations. Still, admit being puzzled by the 46.000 KIA figure. Seems a bit on the high side, esp. given the Wehrmacht fielded some 135 divisions for Fall Gelb and not a single divison was wiped out. Some people say the losses were actually ...

eventually, I have.

Indeed, these are the numbers Pipes endorsed. In the footnote, he points to a book (Warshaw 1972) by a Polish author, certain Zawislki. This is where my query ends.

Must admit being a bit surprised the person in the like of Pipes decided to quote such rubbish.
