Ronald Lameck wrote:And the submarine commander was awarded "Hero of the Soviet Union" for this deed. Makes the word "hero" rather meaningless, doesn't it?
His actions were no worse than those of a U-Boat commander, and a lot of them got medals.

Re: Use of Lufttorpedos by Germany(April-Mai 1940)

At the start of WW2, the only Luftwaffe aircraft which could carry an airborne torpedo was the He 59 and the Seeflieger only possessed 30 operational He 59s in four Staffeln. At this time the He 115 was starting to come into service, but due to the fragility of the LT F5 torpedo it couldn’t be carri...

Re: Hitlers Victory

Hitler was Time Magazine's Man of the Year for 1938. Most people tend to think that this award was a favourable response to Hitler, it wasn't. Time magazine gave him the award due to the fact that it considered him the most influential man of the year, but the article that accompanied the award was...

Re: KG200, Facts & Fiction

Of the 6 B-17's known to have been used by KG 200, one crashed into a hill in fog("Wulf Hound") , one was shot down by a RAF Mosquito night fighter while on a supply drop to Brest in late 44, and two were shot down in error by German flak guns.

Re: Churchhill vs Hitler

[Consider if you will Hitlers halt orders for the Panzers outside Dunkirk and his own comments as regards Great Britain. Hitler still (as we might now call all to naively), thought much of Britain as a nation and people and still felt sure that he could make peace with it after the fall of France. ...

Re: Churchhill vs Hitler

My understanding is that the generals had ordered a halt before he even got involved. He ultimatly supported the halt order but it wasn't his orders that stopped the German army. You are correct, Rundstedt issued the order and Hitler confirmed it later on the same day. It should be noted that the h...

Re: Air Plane Kill Marks

My understanding is that kill markings on USAAF aircraft were unofficial, so there was no standardisation of style or type.
Therefore the use of these symbols would vary for each squadron or fighter group

Re: Question regarding the Firefly

Don't have any stats to offer on Firefly accuracy per se, The 17 pdr was very accurate with rounds other than the early APDS shot but in a related angle -- I do know that they had issues with smoke and dust raised by the concussion of firing obscuring observation of the target after firing. This ma...

Isn't an even more alert crew on an escort ship the last thing a U-boat crew would want ?

Re: Need Details on US M1 57mm ATG

"I know only AP rounds were standard issue to US forces. How many rounds were standard issue? how many could the PCs haul in a jeep/kubel or APC?" The HE shells arrived late but the US got some - as many rounds as thought useful I suppose: they came in cylindrical containers themselves st...

Re: Me 163 night fighters: inquiry

Does anyone have information that would confirm the operational use of the Me 163 in a night fighter role? I had always assumed this not to be the case. However, interviews with two Bomber Command aircrew claiming to have seen them at the end of 1944 suggest otherwise. One description in particular...

Re: Jewish Officers/Sailors in the Kriegsmarine

While a number of people with ancestors of the Jewish faith did serve in the German Navy in WW2, I know of no cases where an actual member of the Jewish faith served in this service during WW2, they were all members of various Christian religious faiths. In truth, outside of Nazi Germany and its ins...
