Zeck....
I believe Zeck was the actual spelling. At least that's how I've generally seen it done.

Zeck...
If I remember right, he was being decorated for rescuing, or helping to rescue, another soldier in Berlin who had been wounded.

Posthumous...
I'm sure there were many. I do know of one, Wilhelm Brinkmann, who was posthumously awarded a promotion to Hauptmann. However, this wasn't confirmed until 1944.

Held by the French...
It's my understanding that there were some 1 million Germans held under French control after the end, and that some 2.2 % of them died in captivity, a rather higher ratio than the 1% death rate among British and US held prisoners. The French were also quite keen on keeping the German POWs as long as...

Ships to die for...
I would have to say that the Germans overall had the best looking ships of the war. The lines, tapering profile, and superstructure design, combined with an always generous supply of portholes gave them a very rakish look, from battleships down through the destroyers. I would agree that the US ALASK...

How many found now? I have one for you...
Are there any known listings/tabulations other than these? My contribution is for Uffz. Carl Alfke. I have an interesting letter he wrote home mentioning his receiving the award. Sadly, he was killed a week later.
All the best,

Germans and D-Day...
True enough, but this should not be accepted and aquiesced to so readily. The German veterans, as those of the Allies, are in the twilight of their years now. Also, the atrocities committed by Allied troops in Normandy are generally ignored, and those who committed them are lumped in with the "...

No D-Day events for the Germans? Disgraceful...
If Nation and State leaders would publicly and officially recognize the great losses and sacrifice that Germany experienced during the Normandy campaign, then veterans and the public in general would do so, as well. This is a battle and campaign that needs to have it's participants and victims, and ...

Allied atrocities...
There are a great number of these incidents, fully admitted to by troops who participated or observed. One of the better known is the lining up and shooting of a large number of SS men at Dachau by the Americans, and also the allowing of liberated camp inmates to beat others to death.
