Yeah it didn't match up in the book I read either. I was just throwing it out there because the number thing was fresh on my mind.

Someone who is an expert will probably give a better answer, but it might be related to the Staffel they were assigned to. I just read a book on JG54 and the color of the numbering identified the Staffel they were in and their call sign. Black-7, White -2, Yellow-3 for example. At least the text and...

I wasn't implying it wasn't documented or happened in a vacuum. I'm implying they briefed Hitler on what he wanted to hear. He wanted divisions created so they created new divisions and left out the fact they disbanded divisions to make it happen. I didn't mean for my post to sound like it was hid f...

In response to the original question I have a speculation. Hitler was obsessed with creating new divisions even though the current ones couldn't be kept up to full strength. I assume that the decisions to disband some divisions while others were reformed might be linked to when he was demanding new ...

I don't have any spefic instances to point to and my resources are at home anyway. But what I have read is that some of the lessons that came out of Poland was they needed better communication because although the battle was one of encirclement the ground forces were still fired upon from the air. T...

Transferring to a different airfield

I've been doing some reading on JG54. Now most sources when listing the TO&E of a squadron only list the aircraft and pilots as if that's all that made up the squadron. But from research I know that ground personnel make up a large part of any squadron and this includes large vehicles like truck...

T5 modified torpedoes

Looking for some dates on the following. I know that the T5 homing torpedo was issued and used by U-boats around Sep 1943. According to my source the T5a was modified to increase it's range and was used on E-boats. The T5b was the same as the T5a but for U-boats. Does anyone know when they were firs...

Panzer Ersatz Battalions 1939

According to Jentz in "Panzer Truppen" when the Panzers were mobilized for war the battalions each gave up their 4th light company to form ersatz battalions. I know the composition of the ersatz companies, but I can't find whether or not the battalions formed had 3 or 4 companies assigned....

Thanks for the info. That confirms the more "believable version" of what I've read. I realized this morning while looking for the thread I clicked Kriegsmarine instead of Luftwaffe when I posted this. Oooops.

'Fritz X'

I'm alittle confused. I've read two accounts, both claim to be documenting the "Fritz X'. One says it was designated as PC-1400 X and was an unpowered guided bomb that was released but could get course corrections by remote control. It was based on the PC-1400 AP bomb. The other says it was the...

Thanks for the response and all the info. Very helpful. I knew the overall topic had immense detail in an answer, which was why I wasn't expecting breakdowns of all the types of units and personnel. I was just trying to get a general feel of how much and what types of support there were and who were...

Staffel and Gruppe Composition

There are plenty of sources around that talk about how Staffels and Gruppen were organized. But they always focus on the number of aircraft. What I'm looking for is alittle more general information on what was assigned to support those aircraft. Any pilot account will mention ground crew and mechani...
