After the fact information
I cant find any other specific reason but any excuse was good enough for Stalin. This move was not made in haste. The Baltic countries were invaded by 800,000 soldiers-sailors. As seen with Iraq , you don't move armies overnight. Trade between the USSR and the Baltic countries was minimal and the ro...

Baltic occupation
Books have been written about the occupation of the Baltic countries but they were for a limited readership are old and you would have to look for them. The shortest reference I can find (I could quote hundreds of pages) is from "History of Latvia" 1951 by Alfred Bilmanis. He, among other ...

Latvians attack Russia
There was a Russian borderpost on the Latvian border that was "attacked and destroyed by Latvian soldiers with all guards killed" . The attackers were never caught.

Evacuation
This subject should include someone who was evacuated from Courland or "the Baltics" ME. I have on other lines on this forum stated how I arrived in the USA. I have no figures for Estonia and Lithuania but after Congress in 1950 acknowledged that the Latvians were not war criminals , aroun...

Leaving Latvia
As one of those "leaving Latvia" from Liepaja in 1944 I must say that there was an evacuation. "The Latvian Legions' 15th division was transported to Eastern Prussia "for retraining" and ended up in Western Germany at the end of the war. Hitler made a rule that families of s...

What has the Waffen SS got to do with this
As I read this later thread , I want to know what being in the Waffen-SS has to do with this. Unless there is proof of criminal activity just being part of this group cant be a war crime. Most of them were busy fighting the opposing armys and had nothing to do with the other items. When the United S...

I forgot
I forgot to mention that in reaserching this I found that the King of Sweden invited the remaining Latvians to Stokholm recently and apoligized to them for the offense. Did the King also do the same to the Germans?

Germans and others escaping to Sweden
In my reading I came across the story of soldiers caught behind Russian lines taking boats to Sweden in hopes of avoiding the Russians. I posted on my website the names of known Latvians , Estonians, and Lithuanians, but all I could find about the Germans was that around 1700 were handed over to the...

Tis a lovely day gentlemen.
I am seeing the light. The French wanted a go at it and the English had a wait and see and the Polish government was running for its life. In response to a question above, when Hitler signed his treaty with Russia , the German-Latvians could stay or move to Germany except the German-Latvian Jews who...

But what if:
Good replies but are we using knowledge of the situation as we know of it today and not limiting ourselves to that of that time. I have a big collection of Latvian magazines of pre-1940 and as the timline gets closer to war the articles shift to defense , chemical attacks. army etc. Placing myself a...

Poland, England, France
Could someone inform me of the reason France and England declared war on Germany for invading Poland but not Russia who did the same thing? If by some chance the German attack on the western front had failed, would the French and English have asked Stalin to kindly remove his troops from Poland? jbets

When Did the Baltic Campaign End
It is generaly thought that when Germany surrendered, the war was over in Europe. There was mention of a small partizan war in the Baltics but being behind the Iron curtain, news was hard to get. In reading the Latvian Legion series books it was mentioned that when the 15th Division was told they we...

I realize this is a German Army website , but to find places today that were mentioned in WWII you must look for the REAL names. There is no Windau or Lebau in Latvia. Those are names given to cities by the German Invaders and not real. During the occupation they changed city names , streets, Highwa...
