Thanks - Nice thread! and a follow up question...

I suspected Hermann Goering would to be among the first to receive a KC... but it's interesting to learn that men of the Kriegsmarine got some of the earliest for individual acts of bravery. And the bonus questions: First KC of the SS... (Joseph Dietrich perhaps?) and first to get the oakleaves... (...

...just ONE more question...

Thanks, I guess that answers my question,

I was referring mainly to the officers of the W-SS formations

One more question: Was membership expected for privates and NCO's too?

I assume foreign volunteers were excluded from membership because they were not German nationals.

NSDAP membership in relation to SS- membership

Hello, experts - was membership of the NSDAP required for SS- officers or just a matter of personal choice?
Just curious.

Reunions with German and Russian veterans?

There has been plenty of reunions between German and western-allied troops, but has there been any between Germans and Russians? Of course the Cold War prevented this from happening for many years, but what about recent years? Maybe the brutal nature of the war on the Eastern Front makes a reunion i...

Did a search here and a lot came up.

I can see a lot of posts have dealt with this in dept, I'll read those. I was just asking because you always get a million references to book saying different things ranging from: "W-SS did nothing but fight battles" to "everybody killed jews and civillians, from Wehrmacht clerks to t...

W-SS and relation to Einsatsgrupppen, any new views?

I know this is an old discussion, but since new research keeps coming up on WWII issues I thought I might bring it up again. I'm asking because yesterday a program was aired on Danish TV about Danish SS-volunteers and this involved the issue "did they participate in murder on civilians" Th...

Maybe a myth?

Günter Nowak's KC was discussed here a few years ago and somebody claimed both him and his destruction of 9 T-34's was a story made up by his company commander to hide the fact that the commander had been absent during a battle, I can't remember where that info was supposed to come from.

You're right, that must be the explanation

With the restrictions on posting copyrighted photos on the web I'm not going to post the pic, but it probably isn't Schienhofen then.

thanks for your answer!

Ostuf SCHIENHOFEN of sSSPzAbt 502, a RKT or not?

I can't seem to find him in any online directories of Knight's Cross holders
but in "Tigers in Combat-2" by W.Schneider there is a photo of him wearing one (p. 357)
