I'm sorry for the loss of your father. My father never talked about his war experiences fighting the Japanese. What little I learned was pried information by myself. My father-in-law is a wealth of information. He has written his memoirs from basic training to the end of the war in the ETO. With the...

I always wondered if combatants, during WWll or any war for that matter, who fought close encounters primarily on the ground, feel different towards the enemy soldier some 60 years later. From documentaries, and the WWll combat veterans I've talked with, it seems those in the air or on sea have diff...

History Channel story: Sonderkommando ELBE "suicide&quo

Did anyone watch the story "Dogfights" on the History Channel (7-13-07) about the German "Ramming" aircraft of the Sonderkommando ELBE unit? Two former surviving pilots were interviewed. It was reported 2000 pilots volunteered and 300 were selected. The first and only flight of 1...

A book on German PW's held captive in America.

For those interested in the treatment of German POW's in America during WWll, I found this book to be very informative and easy to read. In fact, they (POW's) were treated very well and may surprise many American citizens when comparing American POW treatment in foreign lands to their counterparts i...

This reply is obviously too late, but you might be interested in this book: SS REGALIA by Robin Lumsden. It's published by Chartwell Books, Inc. Reprinted in 1996, but I bought a new copy in 2002.

I have Brother's In Arms, plus the manual, and I never play it because I need the game to be SIMPLE. First person, not placing members of your team here and there. By the time I get them situated, I'm surrounded by the advancing enemy. GAME OVER!

I just stumbled across a photo in a book, The Life of Adolf Galland, showing Hungarian pilots who flew in the same unit, JG52, as the Luftwaffe aerial ace Erich Hartmann. It was taken in 1944. So, apparently different countries did provide aircrews to the Luftwaffe. Thanks for the other answers.

Why so many uniforms and insignia's?

I purchased a book so I could try to identify the rank, insignia, and badges of the German soldiers in war movies. No way! Is their any particular reason why the German military had so many different colored uniforms, complicated insignia and emblem designs? Is it like that in the current military?

Were Luftwaffe pilots/crew primarily German?

I've noticed several countrymen from different nations flew for the RAF. I haven't come across any such information regarding the aircrews of Germany. Was the main force of the German Luftwaffe aircrews primarily German?

I'm looking at a book of basic Luftwaffe fighter formations and the one's listed are: Rotte, Schwarm and Staffel. I tried to draw them, but the computer bunches the + symbols (a/c) together, so the 3D accuracy cannot be obtained. If those are the same, I could describe the formations if you like.

Well, I made a phone call regarding the underarm tattoo on the SS soldiers he found, but I won't tell you what he said. :x However, I think your explanation of the "blood group" and a letter, indicates he was right. Something was tattoed under their left arm.
