Re: Angela Merkel

Interestingly she was the only so called leader who acted normally - no airs or graces - she actually mixed with the people & showed an interest. Pity there arn't more like her.

Re: Various terms

Hi Helmut,
In order:
F = Communications NCO
S = Motor Transport Sergeant or Head Ostler.
W = Arms Storeman
K = Storeman
B = Blacksmith - NCO
W = Ordonance Sergeant
F = Feed [Horses] NCO

Meister, normally denotes a senior NCO.

Re: Music

Hi Helmut, Certainly seems that there is a difference. I've had an idea, but have no idea if I'm on the right track. Spielmanszug is definatelly THE military band, used for military purposes, parades etc. The Musikzug could be the more informal band, ie., the band used for dances in the officers mes...

Re: Music

Hi Helmut, Interesting. Checked with all my German aquaintances who still reckon there is no difference. Interestingly enough Musikzug does not appear in any dictionary I possess. That said, like you I have come across both terms in books. Would be interested to know if there is in fact a different ...

Re: Chaplains

Thank you Simon. I do have his records from the Dienstelle & Red Cross. Just thought it would be a nice thing to have his actual POW record as well. Hi Helmut, Uncle was in "Nordland". Not for very long mind you, he was still in the Ausbildung & Ersatz stage when captured on 4 May ...

Re: Chaplains

An uncle, a member of the W-SS never missed mass if he could help it either before, during or after the war, including his stint as a POW in Harwich.
Q.: Is there a possibility of obtaining POW records from the UK? Which archival office is the one to approach?

1. I cross roads at red lights much to the chagrin of Pommie mates. :D 2. I don't stare so much as look down on people. 8) 3. I speak English better than any and all Californians and certainly better than Poms. :D 4. I stand up. :beer: 5. I hate asparagus. :x 6. I like upsetting authorities, thus I ...

Re: Comments on Australian or New Zealand tactics by German Army

Whilst not condoning Bennett's action in doing a runner, at least he did show "initiative". As for evacuating British intelligence officers - why? These unworthy gentlemen along with their non thinking generals got it wrong. Too busy sipping and supping at the clubs to bother about THEIR m...
