580th Artillerie Abteilung

Post by David W »

I see occasional mentions of 580th Artillerie Abteilung in connection with 90th Leichte Division. 2 Batteries, 1 @ 15cm SfH & 1 @ 7.5cm. I have never seen them in an O.o.B or any very credable document.
Did they exist? Did they serve in Afrika?
Any info at all would be appreciated.

Thanks :D

Sorry, no artillery battalion of any kind with the number 580 listed.

However, the 580th Recon Bn of the 90th Div is shown with a non-standard artillery battery of English booty equipment, although of howitzers of about 105mm caliber. Maybe they had more than that - you never know in the DAK just what equipment was being run unofficially by the various units. Whatever they could get their hands on, I guess.

Cheers
Leo.

David: FWIW: “Lexicon” says it existed with 4 batteries:

Heeres-Küsten-Artillerie-Abteilung 772
Aufgestellt am 28. Juli 1941 aus der schweren Heeres-Artillerie-Abteilung 912 mit vier Batterien. Im Mai 1944 auf der Krim vernichtet.
Ersatztruppenteil war die Artillerie-Ersatz-Abteilung 203.

I bow to others, far more knowledgeable than I, to confirm or deny this.

Thanks John :!: :D

I have occasionally seen references to it in N.Africa O.o.B but only occasionally, so I wasn't sure of it's authenticity.
