German Schnelle Division, 1934-1935

Post by Skarn »

Hi forum !

I read several times in the past that there was a Schnelle Division in the German Army before the creation of the three first armored divisions (1., 2. and 3. Panzer Divisionen, October 1935).

Could someone provide me information about this mysterious unit ?
- from/with which units was it formed ?
- when ?
- what was its fate ?

Thank you very much for any help provided !
Regards,

Loic

01.10.1934

Stab/3. Kavalleriedivision (Weichs Freiherr von Maximilian)

* Kraftfahrlehrstab - Stab F 4 (Feßmann Ernst)
** Kraftfahrlehrkommando Ohrdruf (Radlmaier Ritter von Ludwig)
*** I. Abt. (Kühn Friedrich)
*** II. Abt. (Thoma Ritter von Wilhelm)
** Kraftfahrlehrkommando Zossen (Zukertort Karl)
*** I. Abt. (Harpe Josef)
*** II. Abt. (Breith Hermann, 01.05.1935: Streich Johannes)

Source: Jentz, Vol. I, pp. 11 and Nehring, pp. 81

Jentz gives the following other units:

* Stab Schützenbrigade
** Schützenregiment (2 Abt.)
** Kradschützenbataillon
* Artillerieregiment (2 Abt.)
* Panzerabwehrabteilung
* Aufklärungsabteilung
* Nachrichtenabteilung
* 1 Pionierkompanie

First divisional training: Tr. Üb. Pl. Munster, August, 1935; Strength: 12.953 Soldiers, 4.025 Vehicles (Rad), 481 Vehicles (Kette)

Stab/3. Kavalleriedivision became Stab/1. Panzerdivision in Oct. 1935. The troops of Kraftfahrlehrstab (Stab F 4) were used to form the Panzerregimenter 1-6 in Oct., 1935. Kraftfahrlehrstab itself became Stab/3. Panzerdivision in Oct., 1935.

Sorry that´s all.

Hi Stauffenberg,

Does Jentz give any indication if any of the new panzer divisions were mobilised during the reoccupation of the Rhineland in March 1936?. They certainly didn't take part in the actual entry, but were they readied to the rear?

Cheers,

sid.
