Men kept their weapons
The Germans had the men going on leave keep there weapons. They could be used to assist the defense of their transport if attacked by partisans. In late '44 entire divisions were formed from troops who where in Germany on home leave. I'm sure these would only be personal weapons and not crew served....

Excess tankers
Hello Martin, I believe the two tank regiments were reformed into four tank battalions. I'll have to do some digging to see where I read it but the main differences between the heavy and light organization were only three medium and three light tank companies. Of those all three medium and one light...

interchangeable ammo
Hello Matt, Your pictures and dimensions are convincing butI have a hard time believing that Jentz and Hilary Doyle (authors) would have made that mistake. I remember reading about a case in North Africa where the German 75mm tank rounds were being test fired out of Grant 75mm guns. The remote test ...

1AD reorganization
Martin, I doubt that the reorganization was done earlier. I know that when 2 & 3 AD's heard about the proposed organization they fought it tooth and nail (& succeeded). I'd imagine that 1AD leaders felt the same way and would not want to reorganize until ordered to do so, trying until the la...

Pioneer-Maultier
Ron,
That's exactly what I was looking for. Was the armored company organized as three pioneer platoons and weapons platoon?
The Maultiers in both types of units are the half-track mounted werfers is that correct?
thanks,
Jeff

Interchangeable ammo
Matt, I just read in Jentz' book Sturmgeshutz III and IV that the 75mm L43 gun could shoot the ammunition for the 75mm L24 gun. It seems that in some instances the shorter cased ammo could be fired in the chambers designed for the longer cased ammo. Wouldn't that apply to Pzkw IV L48 ammo in Panther...

Panzer Pioneer Battalion '44
Can anyone tell me what the standard (at least as far as 'standard' can be determined) organization for the panzer division pioneer battalion was in mid '44? I see from various books that there should have been one armored pioneer company and two truck mounted companies. Would these companies be ide...

StG III in infantry divisions
Were there ever any 14 vehicle StG III companies in the AT battalions of German infantry divisions in '44 of '45? I've found that some Hetzer companies of that period were authorized 14 combat vehicles. Was the StG III being phased out of infantry divisions and being replaced by Hetzersin late '44/e...

Garrison of France
Can anyone tell me what the lowest strength the German military garrison of France was ever allowed to fall to?
I assume that it was some time in 1942 when the Wehrmacht was at the peak of its comparative strength (with its enemies) and the Allies were least able to threaten invasion.

157th Reserve/8th Mountain
My sources are conflicting (Mitcham's Hitler's Legions, Lucas' Alpine Elite, Williamson's German Mountain and Ski Troops). Two say that the 8th Mountain was formed in '42 and never exceeded battlegroup strength. One says that it was formed in JAN '45 when the 157th Reserve Division was redesignated....
