I've pondered that too, but according to folklore the Germans were puzzled by the response. On one hand, if another term (I would imagine biological in nature) were used, I'd think the Germans would have immediately understood. The picture is a phoney. It was originally attributed to National Geographic and their website shows how the picture was created. The background is the Golden Gate Bridge, but reversed left to right. The shark was taken from another picture and pasted in.

I'm away from my books so I can't verify just now, but there was an American general killed in 1944 (Leslie McNair?) when an American carpet bombing run (part of Operation Cobra?) dropped their bombs on their own lines. I guess this problem the Americans have of dropping bombs on the wrong side goes...

The U-505 was captured on the high seas in 1944, if you want to consider a submarine as a major warship.
