OOB/Strengths of 7.-Armee circa 5 June 1944

Post by Rich »

Continuing from the thread
http://www.feldgrau.net/phpBB2/viewtopi ... 4&start=15

Here is my latest revised document (25 February), including commander and staff names and locations (dates when identified are appended in parenthesis) where known new revisions are mostly additional information on 352.Inf.Div., 716.Inf.Div. and 21.Pz.Div. Please feel free to comment, especially on my transliteration of some of the place names and persons, since I was working off of very poor copies of old documents in many cases. First names of officers would be appreciated.

One major question remains as to who exactly manned the battery at Pte. du Hoc (or Hoe if you prefer)? The 7.-Armee documents clearly remark that the battery was manned by 2.K.K.Art.Abt.1261 and yet other sources indicate that unit manned the Azeville Battery near Marcouf. It turns out that the Pointe du Hoc Battery was actually 2./H.K.Art.Abt.1260 and not 1261 - many thanks to Editions Heimdal for the information.

Also, some documents seem to indicate that 353.Inf.Div. was placed under the command of LXXIV AK possibly just a few days before the invasion, but I cannot find any orders confirming this. Any ideas? ???

Enjoy.

Hello Rich!

You always post great posts with excellent information! I do appreciate your posts! I look forward to your forthcoming book and have already enjoyed the Ardennes one that you co-authored. I also look forward to the Kursk/Prokhorovka book that is forthcoming from Chris Lawrence.

I can not add anything extra to your post or tell what may be missed because your information far exceeds what I have available. So, I will just comment on the great information! Thanks again!

Cheers,

Wolfkin

Rich,

If I could offer additional detail to that, I would be writing a book about Normandy myself :D. Excellent work.

If I could offer additional detail to that, I would be writing a book about Normandy myself :D. Excellent work.

Thanks all, I will see what I can add.

And is there no one who can identify the mysterious SS Geolog (or whatever) unit? :( Someone? Please? Or is it the Grail Research Unit? :D

The closest guess I can come up with, and it's not a very plausible one, is Generalbevollmächtiger für den Arbeitseinsatz, which is usually abbreviated GBA.

Hello!

Yes, I do believe that the SS Geolog unit was involved in the Quest for the Grail as well as in searchings for other ancient and worthy artifacts such as the Ark. This unit has been meticulously depicted in such dramatic films such as Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade. I do believe that this unit's mission in Normandy and other areas of France was to search for various art treasures as well as collect as many wine crates as possible!

:D 8)

Cheers,

Wolfkin

SS-Geology-Btl.

Post by Jason Long »

Rich,
According to an ancient article in Siegrunen 33 there were three companies of SS-Geology men surveying positions for V-1 emplacements in Brittany and also assisting LXXIV and LXV Corps in positioning their fortifications. Supposedly the Btl. Stab remained in Hamburg for the war, but I suppose the Heer listed the companies together as a battalion.

Jason
Perhaps that was just a cover story for their attempts to locate the legendary sword of Roland, Durandal?

Rich,
Do you happen to know the guns that this battery used?

E-Bttr.722 was equipped with 4 24cm railway guns, 4 2cm Flak and 2 MG according to the Gliederung of 1 April for LXXXIV AK. It was subordinated to ARKO 118.

BTW, I hope to repost my first posting with some additional information on commanders and locations later today.

Rich,

bummer. If you had posted this data a year ago, I could have helped you with some things. I was doing research for exactly the same thing, had it all in nice Word-format documents. Then my computer crashed, I forgot to save exactly those documents, and now I have nothing left, except what's in the head...

Are you sure about Öhmichen? I always believed he was connected to the Generalinspekteur der Panzertruppen, and not to the 7. Armee. On the rolls that I have about the 7. Armee, there's a report by him if I recall correctly.

The Stoart duty is also vague. Did the 7. Armee really have a Stoart section at that time, or was it the more or less renamed Harko ... (forgot the number, only with the data in my head),
Nevertheless, Stoephanius was dead within a month.

Great stuff, glad you posted it.
Maybe I have fragments of data on some CD-ROms I burned, have to look for it.

Yeah, I've suffered the same problem, that's what happened to my GOODWOOD data - one day the middle section of the file went pfffft! So now I tend to be a little more anal about backups.

Yes as Stopak he wrote the report on the coondition of the antitank defenses in 7.-Armee that is found in the files of Generalinspekteur der Panzertruppen, the same report is also in the 7.Armee files (NARA RG242,T312,R1567 IIRC). He also appears as Stopac in the various Schematische Gliederung filed at the time.
The Stoart duty is also vague. Did the 7. Armee really have a Stoart section at that time, or was it the more or less renamed Harko ... (forgot the number, only with the data in my head),
This is unclear, since HARKO 309 is not mentioned until late May (IIRC) and appears in the combat Gliederung for June only as early as the 14th. I also just noticed that when HARKO 309 and Grassmann arrive they evidently bring a Feuerleitbatterie 502 with them, rather than 501 which appears in all earlier references. All in all very confusing.
Nevertheless, Stoephanius was dead within a month.
Was he KIA? Do you have a date?

It's something I've been puting off for a long time, glad you enjoy it. Any additional input is very welcome.
