German Rail Guns - Eastern Front

Post by Acolyte »

Hi,

I am currently researching german rail mounted artillery used on the eastern front. I have Ian V Hogg's excellent German Artillery of World War 2, which gives detailed information about the rail guns but no information about where they were used. I know that during the siege of leningrad that at least one rail gun was present.

Any information that you can provide me which rail guns were operating on the eastern front and what units operated them would be most welcome!

Hi,

Here is some information I can find...

In May 1940, there were 9 railroad artillery regiments, numbered: 676, 679, 680, 681, 702, 720, 766, 780 and 781. The batteries were divided as follows:

Number of Batteris | Type of Gun | Battery Numbers | Number of guns in all batteries | Available as of 1 June 1941
1 | 15 cm | 655 | 2 guns/batt.= 2 | 1 battery
2 | 17 cm | 717, 718 | 3 guns/batt.= 6 | 2 batteries
1 | 21 cm | 701 | 1 gun/batt.= 1 | 1 battery
4 | 24 cm | 664, 674, 721, 722 | 2+2+2+1=7 | 3 batteries
8 | 28 cm | 688-690, 694-696, 710, 712 | 2+1 reserve = 17 | 13 batteries (some only had one gun)

676. Rgt: Heerestruppe Westen 15. AOK (Chanelcoast)

AOK = Armee Ober Kommando

So instead of 7. AOK you can also read 7. Armee...

And: there are no stupid questions!

Thanks very much david... I agree they have been very hard to track, I have a very good record of which guns were produced when, especially from Krupps. But onnce they were in the field its been very hard to locate them. I know of the Sevastapol and stalingrad gun deployments, not much more.

Your information has been very helpful! thanks.

German RR guns

Post by Jason Long »

This is a listing of all the RR gun units that I've been able to track for the last half of 1941 in Russia. This information is derived from the Geheimen Tagesberichte and a number of Kriegsgliederungs in my possession and is incomplete. Unfortunately I do not have many Kriegsgliederungs for Army Group Center and really cannot judge which units remained in the East and which did not.

Artillerie-Batterie (E) 765

I'll post the info I have on the RR guns at Sevastopol shortly. Can y'all do the same so we can consolidate our info? I'll need some time to absorb David's material before I can comment.
I wasn't aware that any RR guns were at Stalingrad. Details, please?

Suddenly thought the following would be of use, sorry for not sending earlier.

15cm K(E)

Only four were made [One source says 18 made up to 1938].
Originally used by the army in Eisb.Art.Battr.655, they passed to the navy and were used by the navy as Battr.Gneisenau, they then returned to the army with the battery retaining its name. The guns of Battr.Gneisenau when they were Navy guns had ship type armoured superstructures added.

Only six were made.
Used by Eisb.Art.Battr.717 and Eisb.Art.Battr.718.
A battery was in France in 1942.
A battery was captured in Holland in 1945.

In late 1943 only twelve were in use :
· Four near St.Nazaire in France
· Two at La Bats Battr near St.Nazaire in France

Three were ordered, only two were completed. They were known as „Dora” and then from 22nd June 1942 as „schwere Gustav”.
They were only used at Sevastopol and Warsaw in 1944 as it took six weeks to set them up, and six weeks to dismantle them.
Made: 1 (one) in 1941, 1 (one) in 1942.

Hope it proves of interest.
