Hello, I was wondering if someone could help me. Who was the Chief Engineer (L.I.) of U-29 (Kapitänleutnat Schuhart) at the time she sank the British carrier Courageous on 17 Sep 1939? Thanks.

U-29

Hi
Lt (Ing) Hermann Laufs was LI on U29 from 2/11/38. He was replaced by Kaptlt (Ing) Ernst Kammueller. The trouble is I'm not 100% sure when, but I think after Courageous was sunk.
Will check for you.
Cheers
Lawrence

Hello to all :D; a little complement......................

The U 29's LI on Sep 1939.

The LI at that time was Kplt. Hermann Laufs, who was a pre-war u-boat officer who rose to the rank of Korvettenkapitän and was awarded the DK in Gold.

Hello to all :D; another picture.....................

U 29 on Sep 26, 1939. At home!

From the KTB of the Naval War Staff of September 18, 1939:

English radio announces that the aircraft carrier "Courageous" has been sunk by a German U-boat: the message is confirmed at 1300 by the English Admiralty "Admiralty regret to announce that H.M.S. Courageous has been lost by enemy submarine action". The news broadcast by English radio that the German U-boat had been destroyed is contradicted by the report from the boat U 29 with radio message 18:19: "Courageous" destroyed. Marching home, U 29. The U 29 crew, OiC Kapitänleutnant Schuhart, is awarded the Iron Cross by the Commander-in-Chief (OiC EK I, Crew EK II).
