By screech bombs, I mean small bombs with a hole in the front that made a loud screeching sound on the way down.

Screech bombs?????

Are you talking about the dive-bomber bombs? They did'nt have a hole in the front (how would that have worled???), but had hard-paper whistles - they looked like small organ pipes - attached to the stabilizer fins.

Made a hell of a racket; scary - you better believe it! Joscha

Arturs!

As Joscha said it was a device mounted at the landing-gear of the early Ju-87 Stuka dive-bombers.
This was the standard dive bomber of the german Luftwaffe in the early years and yes it was used in Russia but not until 1945.

It's interesting that they used these propellers just to frightening the soldiers on the ground.

I guess I'm not thinking of the same thing. These were about 18-24 inches long, narrow, and had a hole punched through the middle. Had 4 fins, whistled all the way down, and sometimes they were duds. Used in the Baltics in early years of the war. I was a child, and they scared the heck out of me.
