Hello to all ; a new topic.......................................
Operations of U Boats Type II at the beginning of the WWII.
From the beginning to the end of 1940. Organization and mobilization.
On the occasion of the plans against Poland (Fall Weiss) Kap.z.S. Dönitz took over as FdU-Ost with his HQ in Swinemünde, while Kpt.z.S. Ibbeken took over as FdU-West. To fulfill functions of observation and security in the North Sea, a large number of submersibles Type II of the 1st and 3rd U-Flotilla were placed under the orders of FdU-West (U 9, 12, 13, 15, 16, 19 , 20, 21, 23 and 24, as well as school submersibles U-1, 3 and 4. In order to carry out this task they moved from Kiel to Wilhelmshaven.
Therefore available to operate in the Baltic were the following Type II A/B: U 5, 6, 7, 14, 18 and 22. Of these, U 14, 18 and 22 sailed on August 22 to Memel to carry out the operation "Transportübung Lübeck". While the submersibles Type IIC of the new 5th U-Flotilla (U 56, 57, 58 and 59) would carry out the "Unternehmen Gustav" occupying positions along the Polish coast.
However on August 31, 1939 Dönitz moved his HQ to Wilhelmshaven and assumed as FdU-West, the new FdU-Ost was FKpt. Schomburg.
