Hello john
The E-4 is not the plane number but the plane type. Maybe it cas a E-2 type
The only different was that the E-4 type was equipped with BMW 801C engines.
I am not able to give you a respons but the first Group (Gruppe 1) was based in The Netherlands at Gilze Rijzen and the second group (Gruppe 2) was also based in The Netherlands but at Soesterberg.
A very good book, I think, is the following:
Der Luftkrieg in Europa 1941 - 1945, Die Einsätze des Kampfgeschwaders 2 gegen England und über dem Deutschen Reich by Ulf Balke, Bechtermünz Verlag
I think it's still available here:
http://www.abebooks.co.uk/book-search/t ... hor/balke/
(Attention: The second one, not the first)
Here below the emblem of the Gruppe1 and here below a pciture of an Dornier Do 217 E-4: Hope it helps and sorry for my poor english knowledge
Kindly regards from Belgium
Prosper
