Hello to all :D; something more.....................................

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania and Hela.

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

On September 6, 1939 the 3. / 2 MPS was forced to withdraw from the Height 205.8, after two hours of fighting it was recovered by a counterattack led by por. Josef Stefaniak.

On the evening of September 6, 1939 the 207 ID reached the line Bojahn - Bojahnswalde - Köllnerhütte. The IR 374 was subordinated to Gruppe "Danzig" securing the front Quaschin - Steinkrug (12 kilometers) against Polish attempts to break to the South. The II. / IR 374 (v. der Marwitz) on the line Quaschin - Tuchorner See, the I. / IR 374 (v. Puttkamer) reinforced with the Pi Kp along the line Kölln - Kölnerhütte - southern end of Steinkrüger See, the III . / IR 374 (v. Below) ready to counterattack behind the right flank.

On September 7, 1939 the aerial reconnaissance reported that the enemy was holding the line Koleczkowo / Kolletzkau - Kamien / Steinkrug - Szemud / Schönwalde - Przetoczyno / Pretoschin - Sopieczyno / Soppischin - Petkowice / Pentkowitz - Bolszewo / Bohlschau.Los Grenzwatchregimenter and the Battalion Graf v. Rittberg (SS Heimwher Danzig?) were moving toward Wejherowo / Neustadt from the northwest and west while the 207 ID occupied the line Szemud / Schönwalde - Przetoczyno / Pretoschin - Ostarbowe / Ustarbau - Gowin / Gr. Gowin with the IR 368 and IR 322.

Hello to all :D; something more.....................................

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania and Hela.

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

During the night from 07 to 08 September 1939 it was used for the first time the Polish II. Reserve Battalion (Kpt Jerzy Wierzbowski) to attack two companies of infantry and a battery of the enemy located in Kamienia. The assault was successful and the Germans fled, leaving several dead and wounded; besides were captured three howitzers which were disabled but could not be destroyed for lack of explosives. The Poles returned to their position but the Kpt Wierzbowski and several others Polish soldiers were also killed in action.

In the night from 07 to 08 September, 1939 was the first big test for the I. / IR 374; at 03:00 hours, a Polish battalion attempted a breakthrough between Kamien / Steinkrug - Wysoka / Wittstock, but hit with stiff resistance from the 2./IR 374 (Görs) and the 15. / IR 374 (Meyer) therefore it advanced by the gap with the IR 368 to the left and hit the rear of the 3. / IR 374 before being rejected around 04:00 hours; the Polish commander was killed in action.

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

10 Sep 1939.

On September 10, 1939 the Oksywskiej Kępy’s deployment was as follows: II. Reserve Battalion with its 4. Company at Kazimierz, 5. Company (less one Section) on the road leading to Rumia at Point 14.4; in the clearing between the 4 and 5 companies were deployed the Platoon SG Puck. South of Point 14.4 was the 9. Company of III. ON Battalion. At approximately 13:00 hours the enemy started bombing Kazimierz and the forest area around the height and about two hours later at the height of Mrzezino appeared the first enemy columns.

The Germans started to mop up the wooded land, to link with neighboring units and detach strong reconnaissance patrols to Kępy Oksywskiej. To the south pushed the Kampfgruppe Eberhardt (Danziger regiment and IR 374) and to the north did the same the regiment Wuth (Grenzwatchreg 42?).

11 Sep 1939.

On September 11, 1939 from the north to Oxhöfter Kämpfer went to the attack the regiment v. Bothmer with the battalion Graf v. Rittberg attached to it. Fighting in the coast of Pomerania and Hela.

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

12 Sep 1939.

On September 12, 1939, the IR 368 attacked the western boundary of Oxhöfter Kampfe with three battalions in first line (II. / IR 368, III. / IR 89 and II. / IR 48) nevertheless the town of Kasimir and the Eichenberg could not be conquered. At 13:00 hours began a new attack with the battalion v.Diest (III. / IR 322) and Schüder (II. / IR 48) while the II. / IR 368 engaged the enemy in the forests south of Kasimir , the III. / IR 89 whose brave commander had been wounded, was reorganized in Rahmel / Rumia. In Kasimierz / Kasimir the position was defended by the 3. / 1. MPS of Kpt Tadeusz Nowicki suffered heavy losses. After rolling over Kasimir the offensive pressed on Dębogórza and there it was halted; later the II. / IR 322 relieved the II. / IR 48, which retreated to Rheda. The elimination of the Polish defense at Kasimir generated a dangerous situation and pplk Brodowski ordered the II. Reserve Battalion was to counterattack in the region of Dębogórza.

To the north, the Battalion Graf v. Rittberg (SS Heimwehr Danzig) had to fight for every meter of ground gained. In the South attack III. and I. / IR 374 reached the line Eichenberg - boundary of the forest east of Lensitz.

The Plk Dabek shifted to there the I. / 2 MPS of Kpt. John Wysocki to reject the threat to the northern and western edges of Oksywską Kepy.

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania and Hela.

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

13 Sep 1939.

On September 13, 1939 Oksywskiej Kępy the last bastion of the LOW was organized into four defensive sectors. The first in the northwestern part of the defense, and the backbone was the 1. MPS under the command of pplk (Lieutenant Colonel) Pruszkowski Kazimierz. The second was based on the 2. MPS, under the command of pplk Ignacy Szpunar was to defend the northeastern part of kępy. The third group was created in the south-west in the area kępy Pogorze, the backbone was the III. Reserve Battalion under the command of Mjr. Alexander Jablonowski. The fourth group, under the leadership of pplk Marian Sołodkowski, covering the whole southern kępy. On September 13, 1939 in the struggle for Oksywskiej Kepi the Polish soldiers fought brave and generous, but the German advance had already exceeded its capacity.

The III. / IR 322 should reject strong counterattacks and in these struggles fell Maj v. Diest. On the evening of this day, Gruppe Eberhardt reached the line southwest of Gdingen - west Kielau - West Ciessau - Sagorsch, closing the ring on the enemy. The IR 374 (reinforced) reached the Highway Kielau - Sagorsch and returned its parent unit, the 207 ID.

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania and Hela.

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

14 Sep 1939.

On September 14, 1939 the Gruppe Eberhardt consolidated the occupation of Gdingen. Due north both sides fought hard throughout the day for the bridges at Mosty and Mechelinki, the town changed hands on two occasions but was finally conquered by the German troops.

The II. Reserve Battalion, fought with varying success from 12 to 17 September 1939. At 14:00 hours on September 17, 1939 it received heavy artillery fire on their position. The fire lasted over an hour and caused severe damage. More than 30 soldiers were killed and many others wounded. The Company of Kpt Kostecki was dismembered and its commander was wounded. On the left about 40 riflemen were wounded in the sector of Level 14.4. After an artillery preparation two German battalions went to the attack against Level 14.4 - one from the direction of Kazimierz and the second from Rumia. In the forest the enemy was halted but nevertheless managed to capture the height 14.4; a counterattack launched by two Polish infantry Platoons collapsed. At 16:45 hours Mjr Francisco Burian ordered to attack again. However, before the 4. and 5. Companies were gathered, the enemy achieved the breakthrough and widened the gap, capturing the majority of Polish soldiers. The remains of the battalion withdrew to Suchego Dworu around 19:00 hours.

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania and Hela.

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

Two days later – on September 19 - German forces had conquered KEPE Oksywską, annihilating the forces of the Terrestrial Coastal Defense (LOW). At 17:15 hours - After the death of plk (Colonel) Stanisław Dabka, by his own hand - the last LOW unit had ceased to fight.

The LOW forces (Lądowej Obrony Wybrzeża) served effectively for 9 days (3 days of fighting in Gdynia and 6 in Kepi Oksywskie); its troops numbered about 15,000 men, included 650 of the Border Guard, organized into 12 battalions (equivalent in organic to a reserve division). The biggest problem was the obsolete and inadequate weaponry. German forces numbered about 39,000 troops, equivalent to an Army Corps, being the core of it the 207 ID (Generalmajor Karl von Tiedemann).

Hello to all :D; something more.....................................

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania and Hela.

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

The struggle in Hela.

Since September 15, 1939 the region of Chalup was under the command of the 10. Company’s leader, por Kazimierz Gilunia; the company was reinforced by a section of machine guns under the command of ppor. rez. Gerard Majba. The task that received the subunit was to slow the German advance through successive delay line. The rifle Platoon led by ppor Władysław Hess reinforced with two machine guns, two 81 mm mortars and two 45 mm grenade launcher occupied the first defensive position about 700 meters west of leśniczówki. The 92 soldiers under Hess should slow down the enemy and retreat to the position of the Frontier Guard’s Platoon under ppor. Jan Kolak.

Other parts of the Company - Platoon of ppor. Bitner - occupied a position near Chalup school. In the school established its CP por. Gilunia. Reconnaissance patrols sent to the front had reported that the Germans were to the east of Wielkiej, doing work of engineers from the Gulf of Puck to the sea.

After conquering Kępy Oksywskiej on September 19, 1939, the enemy was prepared to resume the offensive in the peninsula by increasing the number of ground troops (mainly Grenzwatchregiment 42 and IR 374) aviation and naval forces. From that day it were intensified the fire and activity of the enemy against the Polish positions indicating that it was ready to resume the offensive.

Hello to all :D; something more.....................................

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania and Hela.

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

The struggle in Hela.

On September 23, 1939 began the next phase in the struggle for the peninsula, around 14:00 hours and after an artillery fire which lasted two hours, two infantry Platoons supported by heavy machine guns went to the attack against the defensive positions of the 10. Company, but the maneuver did not succeed.

On September 26, 1939, German artillery bombarded the Polish front line. The following day, Sep 27 of 1939, between 08:00 and 12:00 hours the line ship "Schlesien" crushed the Polish positions located between Chalup and Juraty. Around 12:30 hours began a new attack on the first line’s position. After 40 minutes of struggle the German attack was rejected.

The struggle in Hela.

On September 30, 1939 the first Polish position was shelled between 08:00 and 12:15 hours, then the German infantry pressed forward again. The 10. Company was compelled to retreat to the second position and then followed up to the fourth defensive position.

Around 16:00 hours por. Wieckowski detonated the torpedo warheads installed in the second position as improvised explosive devices to slow down the enemy advance in the Area of Kuznica. These explosions not only caused losses but also panic and confusion in the ranks of the attacker, as a result the German advance was again halted. The next morning, German soldiers moved carefully and reached Kuźnicy.
