Fighting in the coast of Pomerania and Hela.

The Sea border in the context of the other Polish borders.

The overall length of the new Polish borders was of 5534 km. The longest - with an extension of 1,912 kilometers was the one which divided Poland of Germany; it represented 34.5% of all the limits. The Polish-Russian border was of 1,412 km (25.5%). Czechoslovakia and Poland near 984 km of extension (17.8%), Lithuania 507 km, Rumania 349 km, Latvia 109 km and 121 km of the Free City of Gdansk. The sea border represented therefore only 140 km (2.5% of the total). After the demarcation the territory of Poland included 388.6 thousands. km2 of which 260 thousand km2 in the past belonged to Russia, 80 thousands km2 to Austria and near 48.6 thousands. km2 was of Prusia. All the zone represented 52% of the Polish state of the year of 1772.

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

The month of March of 1939 was significant in the international relations. In this month the Czech Republic disappeared, being incorporated into the German Reich (15 of March). It was followed by the annexation of Klaipeda (Memel), 23 of March which also was incorporated into the Third Reich.

These events in the international scope placed the Group of Coastal defense (Rear admiral Josef Unrug) in a high degree of alert on March 23 of 1939. The Group received the following tasks:

1) the defense of the main base of the Polish Navy in Hela;
2) to defend the zone of Gdynia to prevent a surprise, in order to mobilize and to transport the fleet and its equipment from Gdynia to Hel; to delay the greater time possible in order to avoid the use of the railroad line and highway Wejherowo - Gdynia; to avoid as much time as is possible that the German artillery would be deployed in the area of Oksywie in order to prevent the bombardments on Hela;
3) to make difficult the movement of the enemy by means of the destructions ".

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

The section of common border with Germany was watched over by 5 police stations:

SG: " Sulęczyno”, “Sierakowice" , " Strzepcz”, “Wejherowo” and “Goszczyno”; the section of sea border by 3 police stations: " Puck" , " Hel" and " Gdynia” and the border with the Free City of Danzig by one: “Kartuzy”. The Commander of the Coastal Defense asked for and obtained a greater subordination of the Borders Guard to his Commando.

The increase of the threat and continues expansion of the forces did necessary to carry out a reorganization in the Commando of Coastal defense, dividing the present Commando of Coastal defense in two: Commando of terrestrial Coastal defense (LOW) and Commando of Maritime Coastal Defense (MOW). The Commander of the LOW was the Plk Stanisław Dąbek (23.07) and the Commander of the MOW defense has been appointed the present commander of the Coastal defense Maritime, Maj Stefan Frankowski.

The zone was under the supervision of the Chief inspector of the Army in Torun (Thorn) General Bortnowski who carried out two inspection to the area (on July 31 and August 01 of 1939 and on August 18 and 19 of 1939). The concept of defense conceived by General Bortnowski after his second inspection was that Terrestrial Coastal Defense (LOW) had to be in capacity of delaying 2-3 days the enemy advance and then to concentrate the fight in the area of Kępie Oksywskiej.

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

The months of July and August of 1939 were of intense preparation for the forces of the LOW. Plk. Stanisław Dąbek predicted that the main impact of the enemy will be from the West (Pomerania), therefore forces of LOW must be prepared to resist the greater possible time in the line Lake Żarnowieckie - Wejherowo - Szemud - Koleczkowo - Redłowo and, the direction of the impact of the German troops on: Wejherowo - Reda; Koleczkowo - Chylonia and Sopot - Gdynia that must be organized with one more strong defense. Kepa Oksywska would be the place of the final resistance.

Mainly in the north in the Police station SG " Goszczyno" the situation was not safe: these forces defended to the south of the line Zarnowieckie (the extreme south of the lake) - Karlikowo - Miechowo. The majority of the troops took its positions to the west along the border. Its task was to defend a bridge on the Piaśnicę stream.

Due south followed the sector of " Wejherowo" responsibility of the Police station of Wejherowo.

The I. Battalion ON (National defense) under Maj. Stanisław Zauch had been subordinated to the Police station SG " Strzepcz" with the object of watching the border. In case of a strong pressure of the enemy in the sector its task consisted of delaying the march of the German troops by means of demolitions and putting a strong resistance on the position of " Krzyżówka". Later to fall back on the defensive position constructed by the 1. Company (Captain Stanislaus Rolnego) in the zone of Level 214 in Szemud.

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

The composition of the sector " Kartuzy" comprised besides the IV. Battalion ON also three Police stations SG: " Sierakowice”, “Kartuzy” and “Sulęczyno”. Their total manpower was of 6 officers and 261 NCOs and enlisted men. It had assigned the following tasks: to recognize and to assure the German-Polish’s border and the Polish with the Free City of Danzig/Gdansk. Most of the forces of Police station SG " Kartuzy" were located along the axis Kokoszki - Żukowo with permanent positions in Kokoszkach, Stare Pila, Borczu, Łapinie, and Egiertowie Szponie. In addition, they were deployed in the lines Rębiechowo - Miszewo (North) and Egiertowo - Somonino (South). Police station SG Puck due to its location was at the disposal of the commander of Terrestrial Coastal Defense (LOW).

By the end of June and beginning of July it was decided to organize a second reserve battalion on orders of the KPT. George Wierzbowski; this battalion was mobilized as of the 06:00 hours on August 24 of 1939 having 23 officers and 754 NCOs and troops. The new unit was integrated within the garrison of Kępy Oksywskiej and subordinated to ppłk. Stanisław Brodowski.

To these forces also added two battalions of navy infantry, the 1. MPS and 2. MPS (Morskiego Pułku Strzelców) and a battalion of Protection of Frontier (KOP) which was organized in Hela having 4 infantry companies, 1 of machine guns and support’s elements.

War. Sep 01 1939.

The 2 MPS.

At 04:45 hours the troops of the Brigade of General Eberhardt opened fire on the positions of the II. /MPS and the position Nº 2 in Kolibki (three men killed and several wounded) also was smashed an artillery observation post; pchor Szańb, Cpl. Florczak and two soldiers were reported as missing. The German troops advanced along the railroad and the highway Sopot - Gdynia under artillery and mortar fire unleashed by the 2 MPS. At 10,00 hours they were stopped in the line Orlowo and Maly Kack.

Later the enemy unleashed an attack with two companies on Bernardowo and Wielki Kack; part of those forces attacked the Position Nº 1 in Level 126.4 who withdrew while fighting around 12:30 hours.

At 22:00 pplk Szpusnar ordered a counter-attack in the night in order to reject to the Germans beyond the Polish border with the I. Battalion, 5. and 9. Companies plus the Reconnaissance Platoon; the assigned objectives Kolibki and Cota 84,3. In spite of a good beginning the attack did not achieve the objective, nevertheless caught 25 prisoners, 5 machine guns, mortars and an antitank weapon. From the corpse of an artillery observer were taken maps, OoB of the brigade, code names, etc.

OW Kartuzy.

On September 01 of 1939 at 04:50 hours the German troops of the Landespolizei Regiment 2, advanced against the defensive positions LOW. They attacked Kokoszki, in the sector of Police station SG “Kartuzy”, with artillery and machine guns; the Polish troops fell back towards Lezno. The guards of Owczarni fell back in direction Miszewo - Przodkowo under the grenades of the German artillery. The Commander of Police station SG “Kartuzy” ordered to defend a line located due east of Zukowa. The guards in St Pila reported enemy troops of about a Platoon on the railroad. At 09:00 hours a Polish Platoon had taken position in Borkowo to reinforce to the elements in Zukowo.

On the western front the enemy units carried out exploration in force on the Polish border.

OW Wejherowo.

At 06:00 hours the enemy attacked the sector of Wejherowo but it was stopped in front of Warszkowo and Zelewo having suffered some losses. Opposing forces (a company) could penetrate on Strzebielno but were stopped by the fire in front of the positions " Platen" - " Zamek" and " Charwatynia".

The attack of the Grenzwacht Rgt 42.

It was 01 of September of 1939, the 4. /Grenzwacht Rgt 42 left to an exercise nocturne. Smoking had been prohibited strictly and the lights also. The gas masks were ready, not for their use but in order its case does not hinder us and it does not make noise. The company marched to the assembly point, Hopfenkrug. The observation tower of the customs officers was reached. The Company commander was called to the forest house. The Major, Commander of the battalion, took the word and said solemnly: Gentlemen the situation is serious, at 04:45 hours we will cross the border. I know each of you will fulfill with your duty. Live to the Führer, live to our troops and long life to the Great Germany.

We became familiar with the map and each detail was registered. The tasks and objectives of the day were defined accurately. The Uffz Weber of Hygendorf was the leader of the spearhead group. The order arrived: to load and secure. Spearhead group march!. It was 04:40 Hours and the border was located some hundreds of meters ahead. Hauptmann Puttkamer said: as it was ordered at 04:45 hours we crossed the border. We pass the forest, to the left in the sector of the neighboring battalion, some detonations were listened. To the right machine-gun fire; two groups of our battalion cleaned the town of Woysk which was in our itinerary ............

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

War. Sep 01 1939.

At 04:45 hours sounded the first shots in the dense fog in the southeastern limit of the bulge of Butow and shortly after the border position was in the hands of the troops of border guards (grenzwatch). At the same time it was marching by Butow towards the international limit the 207 ID (Landwehr - territorial) with the IR 368 (Generalmajor v. Oesterreich) in the lead.

Between 6:00 -7:00 hours in the sector of the Police station of SG " Strzepcz" appeared one German patrol of 5 soldiers who came near to Zakrzew. After an exchange of fire - 1 soldier was killed, 1 wounded - the Germans withdrew. The attempt was repeated during afternoon but once again they were rejected. German patrols crossed the border along the highway to Gawidlinę (section Police station SG " Sierakowice"). On the border in the sector of Police station SG " Sulęczyno" around 50 Germans advanced towards Jamno and " Okopy Szwedzkie". By afternoon (approx 18:00 hours) the German soldiers had been taken Jamno and Golcewo.

In the sector of Police station SG " Goszczyno" on 1º of September of 1939 did not display difficulties. It was not until the following day in the morning that Captain SG Jan Dzięciołowski (Commander Police station in Gdynia) with 20 local men of ship's crew and guards, successfully rejected a German advance by the bridge of Piaśnicę. The Poles under the command of the ppor. SG Jędryczk waited for the German answer and were suitably prepared themselves for that "visit". At night German troops carried out the attack, suffering the loss of 9 men among KIA and WIA.

02 September 1939.

2 MPS.

On September 02 of 1939 strong naval gunfire and artillery on Witomino with serious losses. Around 07:00 hours the Position Nº 2 withdrew before intense enemy pressure. At the same time hard German attacks from Marienthal towards sector of the Position Nº 1; the position changed of hands several times until finally the Poles withdrew definitively from there. In the sector of the main effort Sopot - Gydnia the enemy again was rejected by the II. /2 MPS, suffering serious losses.

On September 02 of 1939, due to the strong German pressure the guard of the position " Niepoczołowice" withdrew to Strzepcza. From Kętrzyno to Tłuczewa the combined forces (in all 17 guards) repeatedly rejected the German patrols. At 18:00 hours (01 of September) the Border Guards carried out the projected destructions and once finalized they retreated towards Mirachowa and Sierakowickie. In Sierakowice the defense was maintained until noon and soon it fell back by Mojusz to Miechucino. In the evening Captain Mordowski ordered the Commissioner of Sierakowice to maintain Miechucino.

02 September 1939.

In the morning of September 02 of 1939 the German forces advanced in the direction of Sulęczyno; the battalion of Captain Mordowski retreated towards Węsior after one short fight; from there at noon, following the request of the commander, in order to continue to Borucin. Around 22:00 hours the border guards fell back of Zukowo to Rutki.

In the morning of September 02 of 1939, the 207 ID continued its advance in two columns; to the south, the stronger one, headed by the IR 368 and followed by the IR 374 towards Berent/Koscierzyn and more to the north the IR 322 towards Sulleschin/Sulezno. The IR 322 reached the edge of Sulleschin after a short combat and pressed in the direction of the heights due north of Berent. While in the South column, a motorized vanguard on the basis of the Pz Abw. Abt 207, reached Berent and occupied it by mid afternoon. At dusk reconnaissance patrols reached the border of the territory of the Free City of Danzig in Ochsenkopf. Thence the connection with the troops who were fighting from there had been obtained.

03 September 1939.

2 MPS.

On September 03 of 1939 the Polish regiment established a strongpoint on Height 133 with the 9. Company reinforced with machine guns, cannons and mortars under control of por. Albin Wnuk. The dominant feature was important for both parts and the fight continued all day long. During the night from the 03 to the 04 of September of 1939, plk Dabek ordered several counterattacks to expel to the enemy in front of the positions of the II. Battalion in Kolibek and Osowa. Partial success, it were captured the train station and the town of Osowa but the Poles withdrew at dawn suffering 7 KIA (one officer) and 20 WIA.

At dawn on September 03 of 1939 Zukowo was in German hands. The Kpt Mordowski ordered a counterattack which was executed at 11:00 hours; nevertheless the Germans attacked again by 14:00 hours but they were rejected, in spite of it around 21:00 hours and before the threat on its flanks, Zukowo was left definitively.

However, in the sector of the Police station of " Strzepcz" the German forces were active in the direction Tłuczewo - Strzepcz. The border guards along the Łeba river were able to reduce the threats on " Krzyżówkę".

Towards afternoon on September 03 of 1939, the regiments of the 207 ID reported the conquest of a defensive position located between Ochsenkopf and the South end of Radunskie. In this way had been cut communications towards the south of the Polish troops engaged on the North sector of the Corridor.

04 September 1939.

On September 04 of 1939 it was a difficult day for the defenders of Kartuzy; after the occupation of Zukowo, the Commander of the OW “Kartuzy” ordered to ppor. (2º lieutenant) SG (Border Guards) Néstor Chtiejow together with 18 guards to march from Smołowino to Sitno in order to organize the defense between the lakes. Meanwhile ppor. SG Marian Witkowski with 18 cyclists, settled down on the highway Przodkowo - Kczewo.

During the morning ppor. SG Edward Bednarski with some guards and cyclists attacked towards Zukowo but it only managed to retake the railway station and western Zukowo killing 8 adversaries. The success did not last much and by 10:00 hours had to withdraw towards his departure position. Chtiejow and Witkowski resisted during afternoon but at 20:00 hours resumedthe withdrawal in the direction of Grzybno. In this day there is no pressure of the Germans from Sierakowice but the forces of the Police station did not manage to affect the locality and was killed the Commander ppor. SG Zbigniew Habdaś.

04 September 1939.

The pressure of the German forces was very strong in the sector of Police Station SG "Sulęczyno” against the three organized defensive positions (two on the heights in the zone of Brodnica and one on the bridge in Brodnica Dolna). At 10:00 hours the Polish defenders reject enemy patrols but soon the adversary attacked with the support of two light armored vehicles and the border guards were forced themselves to withdraw to Kartuzy. During afternoon on September 04 of 1939 Kpt Mordowski, appreciating the imminent threat on his troops, decided to fall back towards Gdynia during the night.

The forces of the Polish Army and the border guards of the police stations of "Kartuzy" , “Sulęczyno" and "Sierakowice" plus the defensive position of "Kartuzy" – which constituted an important link in the terrestrial coastal defense, had been separated of the Polish main forces and had to fight by themselves. The situation became particularly difficult for the 1. Battalion of Navy Riflemen (1. MPS) because it had debilitated its wings and had troops of the German 207 ID on its rear.

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania and Hela.

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

04 September 1939.

On September 04 of 1939, in the area of the Commissariat SG "Strzepcz" the position of Wyszecinie was attacked by an enemy Platoon and after 45 minutes fell back to Czestków. At 13:00 hours por. SG Jerzy Wojciechowski sent a patrol towards Wyszecino which returned around 15 hours.

In the sector of the 207 ID the Poles did not attack. Polish troops around Konitz / Chojnice retreated towards the Vistula after heavy fighting. The 207 ID received a new task: to attack northward in conjunction with troops Danzig and two Grenzwatchregiment in order to clear of Polish troops the area of Neustadt / Wejherowo and Gdingen / Gdynia.

The division moved ahead in broad front having as its objective Karthaus / Kartuzy. On the stream Radaunen / Radunia the AA 207 (v. Wedel) found the first serious resistance on both sides of Semlin / Semonino and there suffered the first casualties. With the support of two artillery batteries the I. / IR 374 (v. Puttkamer) attacked and seized the neighborhood of Semlin and later occupied the heights of Kelpin / Kielpino. In the evening the company Neumann continued to Karthaus. Moving further west split in two groups, was the IR 322 (v. Kröcher) which that night still took Karthaus / Kartuzy. The Battalion Schüder (II. / IR 48) captured the first Polish guns and besides took 50 Poles as prisoners.

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania and Hela.

The Polish coastal defense in September of 1939.

In the area of "Wejherowo", there were no significant changes in the German troops. Hostile patrols against Kębłowo and Luzino, the Polish forces withdrew from the Commissariat SG “Luzino”. In the region of Paradyż, Kochanowo, Sychowo, Góra, Gościcino the fights lasted all day long. On September 5, 1939, after carrying out the destruction planned in the area Łebno – Krzyżówka, ppor. SG Jan Babiarz retreated to Szemud.

In the five-day period between 01 to 05 of September 1939 the forces of the Commissariats SG "Kartuzy", "Sulęczyno", "Sierakowice", "Strzepcz" and "Wejherowo" had generally accomplished with the plan designed by Plk Stanisław Dabek which consisted in executing the destructions and to delay the German advance, but few actually played a useful rol, especially to the west, in the delay of the Germans.
