Hi guys,

Having a debate at work as to what version of Lilli Marlene is better. Personally i like the tune for Lale Anderson (1939 version) but prefer Dietrich's voice... One of the guys i work with swears by the original Anderson version.

Both versions can be found here.

Cheers

Chris

ps. I really prefer the 6 Panzergrenadierdivision version

Dunno, but didn't the same guy write 'Bomben auf engeland'?

I think the original poem was written in WW1 but the song was indeed written by Norbert Schultze who wrote a lot of the German Marches like the catchy "Bomben Auf Engerland!"

Surely the Lale Anderson version is definitive.

All the cover versions by Vera Lynn, Marlene Dietrich, Anne Shelton, etc., only exist because the original Lale Anderson version had such an impact. As far as Lili Marlene is concerned, they are all just Lale Andersen tribute acts!

MY favourite interpretation of Lilli Marlene is neither by Lale Anderson or Marlene Dietrich.

It's by Musikkorps 6 (Hamburg) der Bundeswehr (later Heeresmusikkorps VI) under Oberstleutnant Gerhard Scholz in the Drei Lilien Drei Lilien potpourri (1959). If anyone has ever heard this potpourri, you would know that's a truly march music!

P.S. The same potpourri I mentioned has the best interpretation of Westerwaldlied, Lore-Lore-Lore, Hamburg ist einen Schoenes Stadtchen, Panzerlied and of course Lili Marleen

My wife and I are friends of Lale Andersen's youngest son, so I MIGHT be biased, but I think her version of "Lili Marlene" is the definitive version of the song. Never cared for Marlene Dietrich - a mediocre actor, a poor singer, and her much-vaunted legs were very ordinary. My wife's legs are 100X nicer.
