R.A.D. and O.T. units in the East

Post by Jason Long »

I have a number of army-level OBs from units in the East that list units like RAD K 44, 45, 132 and O.T. 29 and 37. Were these really construction units of the RAD and Organization Todt?
Does anyone have info on their composition and activities?

Jason, they were indeed. RAD and OT units were routinely organized and sent to serve on the Eastern Front. Some RAD units even saw service on anti-partisan operations. Somewhere I believe I have a listing of the many RAD units that were formed in or served on the Eastern Front.

Hello!

As Jason Pipes said RAD units were often involved in security and guard activities in the rear army area. Here some related photos.

Hello!

The first and the last are original Propaganda photos in my collection. The others I posted are from a book printed in 1943.

The main role of the RAD in Russia was as an engineer troop, for change the russian railways to the normal continental meassurements (like my grandfather at his first russian turn) for example.

As you can see at some photos, they had only old weapons like the G98 and the MG 08 and/or MG 08/15.

Hi

K44, M5 1/26, 2/26, 3/26 and M336 W37 were ausbildung kompanie for 15SS Div "Lettland" and fought near RAD Lager Torun (Thorn). It was lettland kompanies from POWs Lager (ex. Stalag IB Hohenstein-Olsztynek). They had few weapons, most of them had old Lebel and Mannlicher. Circa a 25 Jan 45 they ran away to Bydgoszcz (Bromberg) with 15SS. Parts of RAD with soldiers from KM and Fl.H.Kdo and Ersatz Inf. Btl. fought west of Festung Thorn and were surround in Thorner Kessel (triangle Toruń-Bydgoszcz-Unislaw: Thorn-Bromberg-Unislau)ond on Wisla River (Weichsel). Many of them was killed by Russians nord-west of Bromberg (500-600). 140 of them was killed near Dabrowka (west of Bydgoszcz). They hadn't guns and equipment. Sorry, my english is not well but if You have any informations,OBs about Festung Thorn or Thorn neighbourhood (Wehrkreis XX Danzig) please send me mail: [email protected]
