Army Group "G", 1st Army OOB

Post by John W. Howard »

Hello:
I am looking for the OOB of the German 1st Army, just before the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, and just before the landings in southern France on August 15, 1944. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please cite sources please. Thank you.

Hi John,

AOK 1

LXXX A.K. - 158 InD, 708 InD
LXXXVI A.K. - 159 InD, 276 InD

This info can be found in Cross Channel Attack, by Gordon Harrison and in World War II Encyclopedia of facts and figures, by John Ellis (this also lists LXVI A.K. Hq).

August 15:

LXXX A.K. - 5 FjD (KG), 16 VgD, 331 InD, 352 InD

This info is from Retreat to the Reich, by Samual Mitcham

Hope this is of some help.

Greetings John:

Sorry, don’t have a completely accurate D-Day OoB put together yet so included 15 May 44 as closest I have to that date. You only asked about AOK-1 but I thought I’d throw in all of HGrp”G” just for the heck of it!

KRIEGSGLIEDERUNG STAND: 15 MAY 1944 [15.5.44]
O.K.W. – Kriegsschauplatze:

KRIEGSGLIEDERUNG STAND: 15 AUG. 1944 [15.8.44]

--- 158 Res. Div. (parts)
--- 16 Luft. Fld. Div. (parts)
- 159 Res. Div.

NINETEENTH ARMY: [A.O.K.-19]:

A.O.K. Reserves (z.Vfg.):
- 11 Pz. Div.

- 189 Res. Div. (parts)
- 244 Inf. Div.

LXII (62) Armee Korps:

- 148 Res. Div.

The above information was mostly put together from the excellent CD set obtainable here through Feldgrau, with a little further research from:

“Hitler’s Legions” by Samuel W. Mitcham
“The German Army in the West” by Siegfried Westphal
“The Marschall Cavendish Illustrated Encyclopedia of WWII”
“Panzer – A Revolution in Warfare” by Roger Edwards
“German Order of Battle – 1944” – Arms & Armour Press
“History of the Second World War” by B.Liddell-Hart

Hope this helps to you.

Thank you Jerry and Shadow for taking the time to answer my question. I see one area of difference, so I will ask you guys to check it for me if you are able: in the August 15th info you both provided, Jerry mentions the LXXX Korps and Shadow mentions LXXXI Korps in AOK 1, with both containing the same units. Is it LXXX Korps or LXXXI Korps?? Once again any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

JOHN -

Just looked again at the original OoB for 15 Aug. 44 and it shows LXXXI (81) A.K. under AOK-1, BUT I THINK THIS IS AN ERROR!
When I checked back to the 15 Jul. 44 OoB - it shows LXXXI (81) A.K. with AOK-15 and LXXX (80) A.K. with AOK-1.
Seperate sources indicate LXXXI (81) A.K. assigned to PzAOK-5, sometime in Aug. 44, so I think it's safe to say LXXX (80) A.K. was the correct one with the First Army!
Thanks for pointing that out!
all the best -

Hello Shadow:
Thank you once again for your help; it is greatly appreciated. Thank you for including the info on 19th Army; I was about to ask about them in a second post, so you read my mind. I think you are right about buying Jason's CD; it may come in very handy soon. Thank you once again. The Shadow knows!!!! Best wishes.

Shadow,

When you say
Just looked again at the original OoB for 15 Aug. 44
are you refering to the CD that you mentioned before or some other source?

FWIW my own research and resultant database indicate LXXXI A.K. under AOK 15 from mid '42, then AOK 7 from latter part of July '44, then PzAOK 5 from August 11, then back to AOK 7 from early September, then back to AOK 15 near the end of October.

Hello Jerry! :D

Indeed I do mean the OoB shown on the CD for 15 Aug. 44 - showing LXXXI (81) A.K. in top righthand corner of frame 250!
I just now noticed it shows "Gen.Kdo.LXXX.A.K." in the top left corner of the same frame under "Heeresgruppe D: OKW"!!
My research, also, never shows LXXX (80) A.K. serving with Heeresgruppe-"B" in the north.
Thanks a million for your information on the dates for LXXXI (81) A.K. my friend. Helps fill in some more of my endless questionmarks!

best regards - as always -
