Rupture of the Stalin Line along the sector Zwiahel - Hulsk and conquest of Shitomir - July 1941.

The struggle continued however and new assault teams progressed through the fortified positions. But by the river, the infantry found another obstacle, the bridge had been destroyed and the Germans received heavy fire from both sides coming from bunkers and positions dug into the earth. Nevertheless, further south another armored division managed to cross the Slucz and the advance into Ukraine continued ... ....

Indeed, on the morning of July 7, 1941, a rifle regiment (SR 93) of the 13 Pz crossed the Slucz in pneumatics boats. That very morning, and with good support of heavy weapons it broke through the line of fortification. In the action, the II. / SR 93 (Major Leroux) suffered heavy losses. On July 8, 1941 were repulsed strong counterattacks.

Rupture of the Stalin Line along the sector Zwiahel - Hulsk and conquest of Shitomir - July 1941.

However, the situation in the SR 66 was very different because the Soviets left that the sappers approached to the shore with their assault boats and then opened concentrated fire on them, killing personnel and destroying the boats. But the assault on the railway bridge was successful and the Germans were able to deactivate the explosive charges at the last minute and opened the way to the bunker covering the bridge, which was captured after three hours of fighting.

In the gap between the two armored divisions was engaged the 25 ID (Mot), which was to break through the southeast positions of Zwiahel, crossing the Slucz and achieve the road to Shitomir. But it occupied its starting positions in the vicinity of the Spanish school of Zwiahel and jumped to cross the Slucz only on July 8, 1941. At 03:30 hours the German artillery opened fire and one hour after the IR 35 and IR 119 attacked the Soviet defensive positions. Despite the fanatical resistance of most of the forts at 08:45 hours the IR 35 reached the river bank. But the last 300-400 meters could not be overcome due to hostile artillery fire.

Rupture of the Stalin Line along the sector Zwiahel - Hulsk and conquest of Shitomir - July 1941.

The Commander of the IR 35 ordered to reconnoitre the left flank to Zwiahel, and there it was found a gap through which the fractions of reconnaissance crossed the river, about 80 meters wide at that point. Due south it was heard loud noise of combat, but to the north the enemy had retreated. At 12:00 hours the IR 35 established a foothold in this sector. At 16:00 hours the Pi Btl 25 completed a pontoon bridge and crossed the support guns; at 16:30 hours the IR 35 reached the road to Shitomir in Novo Romanivka. Shortly afterwards, joined there the IR 119.

On July 9, 1941, the Stalin Line could be finally broken and the Division (13 Pz) advanced to the Irpen at 03:00 hours. The III AK (Mot) ordered the 13 Pz to proceed towards Broniki and then to a Shitomir. Around 19:00 hours the sappers of the division completed a pontoon bridge of 16 tons and crossed the vehicles and support weapons. The I / SR 93 (Oberstleutnant von Raczeck) after a raid of 60 kilometers, with the support of the 7th Company of PR 4 (Oberleutnant Renk), seized the city of Shitomir by a lightning attack.

Rupture of the Stalin Line along the sector Zwiahel - Hulsk and conquest of Shitomir - July 1941.

On July 9, 1941 at 05:00 hours the IR 530 left its readiness area, a wooded area north of Philipovichi, quickly and almost without resistance crossed the river Slucz; around 05:30 hours the first waves had firmly set foot in the second bank. In the afternoon had been conquered the heights east of Slucz (4 km northeast of Zwiahel). At dawn on July 10, 1941 the IR 530, together with the IR 529, attacked from its starting position located in the forest north of Rzadkowka and marched across the wooded area northeast of Zwiahel. In broad front the regiment moved at the right flank of the 299 ID with the I. / IR 530 to the left, the III. / IR 530 to the center and the II. / IR 530 to the right. The IR 528 was Divisional reserve assembled near Haly. Some 400 prisoners were captured and the rest fled to the north.

The forces swept by the 299 ID were in fact the covering force of the Soviet 5º Army (MI Potapov), advancing from Korosten to Novograd Volyn. On July 10 of 1941, the 22º, 9º and 19º Mechanized Army Corps plus the 31º Rifle Army Corps had launched a counterattack from the northeast at about 10-20 km to the area of ​​Sergeevka , Fedorivka, Bronyki in order to cut the road to Zhitomir and looked for to achieve Zwiagel.

After breaking through the Stalin Line the 13 Pz continued its progress towards Broniki and later on Shitomir. Against this threat were engaged the PR 36, the Kradsch. Btl 64 and the 25 ID (Mot). Besides the 299 ID struck north due east of the railroad Zwiahel – Korosten and the 44 ID was commited in order to follow behind the III AK (Mot) and secure the road to Shitomir.

The enemy had cut the road Zwiahel - Shitomir in several sections, and all traffic along it was impossible. Orders for the 44 ID specified that the division was to free the traffic along the road in order to allow the resupply of the armored divisions that were pressing on towards Kiev.

The LAH was also engaged in these struggles as recounted by Panzermeyer : on July 7 1941 we have rejected continuous enemy attacks. At 14:00 hours we received the task of securing the flank of the 11 Pz and reconnoitering northeast from Miropol. On July 8, 1941 we engaged in heavy fighting in the forests north of Romanov.

The situation became critical in the northern supply route; the III AK (Mot) continued to Shitomir and Kiew and the 25 ID (Mot), responsible for the security along the extensive northern flank was attacked by the enemy. On July 9, 1941 we must move from Romanov northwards through the wooded land in order to establish liaison with the Kradsch. Btl 25 in vicinity of Sokolov.

Rupture of the Stalin Line along the sector Zwiahel - Hulsk and conquest of Shitomir - July 1941.

At 17:30 hours and having fire support from two 88 mm cannons, the 1./ AA LAH (Gerd Bremer) went on the attack. After fighting in Marshilievsk, the AA LAH reached the road to Shitomir (Rollbahn Nord) and linked with the Kradsch. Btl 25. There it took up positions east of Sokolov until it was relieved by a battalion of the SS-IR 1.

Between July 12 and July 15 of 1941 fierce counterattacks succeeded in the rear and the left flank of the 14th Pz therefore the situation became critical, which forced the German command to change the advance of the main effort on Kiev. The Soviet troops maintained their new positions, but under pressure from forces of a far superior enemy, were forced to retreat since July 15, 1941 onwards.

The Bau-Pionier Bataillon 414 in Russia 1942. Based on the diary of Hauptmann Erich Landzettel.

From 23 to 28 March 1942.

A transport unit of the SS came for us in trucks and carried us towards Weschki from where we had to continue on foot to our encampment in the woods. In Weschki in a shed were stacked the corpses of German soldiers killed in action and could not be buried due to the freezing of the soil. A paramedic required help from my men in order to identify them but I rejected the idea because I felt that it was not a task for rookies. Most of my personnel had never been at the front and had to gain experience slowly. Anyway some suffered a strong emotional impact.

Just at the rearguard of Weschki we were greeted by Russian artillery fire, but it fell quite short. It was our baptism of fire. We continue the march to the place of our bivouac, cleared the snow and pitched the tents. Our task was to work along the icy trails. The pioneer Schaberg was wounded in the knee and head by shrapnel from flak.

Around in the snow lay the bodies of the Russians and Germans alike. Somewhere ahead was the front of the great siege in which the Soviets were locked. A pionier NCO pointed out to me the Soviet mines that lined the road. At dusk this NCO wanted to impress the newcomers and showed them a mine that exploded in his hand, losing it and the eyes.

May 30, 1942.

Wake up at 03:30 hours and marched towards the position at the north loading station (east of Semtitzy) on the path to Krutik, which had received a heavy bombardment. We remove mines and transported to the assembly area of ammunition (Semtitzy-north). Return to the forest to begin construction of a tailspin. At 11:20 hours began the attack with all means: Stukas, artillery, etc.. At noon bombardment of the Russian heavy artillery, a grenade exploded near the positions of the company. June 2, 1942.

Motorcycle ride. I proceeded on foot to the job site and I moved further forward where we were yesterday. Our tanks are gone. I'm in the woods where the Russians built two huts beneath the tall pines. The scene was very romantic with the sun filtering through the branches and the landscape seemed taken from a history of the Indians. But here the Russians were dead, I felt sorry for the dead Russian soldier beside his beautiful dwelling. Their food were scattered on the ground and the ants seized the sugar.

Upon returning I found that Uffz. Schröder had been wounded: a bullet wound. At noon we were in front of our cabin when we heard a huge explosion and a flame rose into the sky, followed by a cloud of black smoke. I thought the enemy had thrown a firebomb. Then we saw a truck on fire, it was a towing vehicle of the armored troops. Nearby lay a badly burned man who was no longer moving and beyond him a second man also burned. I covered the bodies with earth to suffocate the fire and called my men and after a long time we put out the fire on the vehicle, which was burning. Then we collected the belongings of the soldiers.

Two people were killed by negligence, beside an open fuel bin there were several loose cigarettes, I guess one would have been smoking and the fuel vapors exploded. One man was sitting at the wheel of the vehicle and flew in an arc through the air by the explosion, his foot remained next to the brake lever, so the force with which the body was thrown. At 23:45 hours came a lieutenant of the armored forces and took over everything. He said the best official explanation for the bereaved was that the vehicle had stepped on a mine.

June 27, 1942.

The night was quiet. In the morning came the order to engage another Platoon to the right of Oberleutnant Schneider in the sector of squadron Seufert, now we have the 1. and 2. Platoons in the frontline and the 3. Platoon as reserve. More to the right, where the Russians had penetrated, I visited the first line and one advance machine gun position, nearby of it lay five killed Russians. One was a boy, pale, his eyes half closed and his hands on the abdomen. What kind of agony had suffered, but the worst thing was that he was very similar to my Eric and that idea followed me all day long.

Many injured were still in the swamps but nobody dares to rescue them, left and right you can see the wires of mines and booby traps placed over the trees to the knees and with the slightest touch detonated the mines which in turn had steel supplements that fly direct towards the belly. The Russians do not care for their wounded comrades, stripped to the fallen and divide their belongings among them. From the rear arrives a phone order (no writing) do not take prisoners, you can not dispose of them. In conclusion what should be done, shoot the wounded?.

June 28, 1942.

In the evening visit of the Russian pilots, antiaircraft guns opened fire and I had just returned to the shelter when I saw when a Russian plane crashed in flames. In the morning the Seufert Squadron was ordered to retreat and we were alone, without the support of the good and modern equipment of the active troops.

In the afternoon I did a survey of the Western trail, Hauptmann Startz and Oberleutnant Wilk came also. We moved beyond the Erika trail up the edge of the forest without seeing a German soldier. We saw many Russians corpses covered by blowflies and the air was filled with a foul odor. In the forts had wounded Russians who fed himself from the carcasses of horses. A picture of misery, what to do with them? no food or water and hide like animals by fear and anxiety.

Today I saw for the first time the infamous Erika trail. After dinner I went away again to the forefront. Hauptmann Startz came and brought the news that the Wolchow's siege had ended. We are the only occupants of the casemates. Ahead are the Russians wounded, who were recovered with Russians stretcher bearers and we gave them some bread. Air operations overnight. I lay in bed.

June 29, 1942.

During the morning with Ionberg in the Erika's Trail. The landscape reminds Cerny in 1914, on the Western Front during the First World War. The embankment was littered with corpses with their black heads full of worms. I saw worms swarming in the heads and forming thick balls. Amid all weapons, guns, tanks, cars with their horses and craters. The trees were bare trunks and stumps. It was a horrible picture. The stench of the corpses was unbearable. Blowflies clouds filled the air with their buzzing.

Walked along the path but did not get to the first line. Always more of the same. No living thing could be seen in this place of death. But right and left swarmed the Russians still hidden in the forest. Our artillery and Stukas have left their mark here.

At night there is moonlight. A loud speaker with Russian music and slogans invites the scattered Soviet behind Weschki to surrender. About the Wolchow seen moving silently and tirelessly the Soviets searchlights against the night sky. There is a strange war here: tough and ruthless.

July 02, 1942.

Slept in the hermitage of the riders. The night was calm. In the morning we sat down to read the DAZ [Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung], I wrote some letters: it was quiet. At noon came three officers from other construction battalion, Who were also quartered in the area. I arranged for them a patrol towards the Erika Trail from yesterday to today. There the atmosphere was of pain and misery!. Uffz. Bonkhofer told me he had found a wounded boy there, about 5-6 years, still alive. He just realized that the boy had life due to the eyes movements. The worms were already in his wounded leg. Another little boy in the neighborhood was already dead. I told Bonkhofer, we had to pick up the child, but he said not to worry about that. Then I told him that he should end his torment with a shot. With Bonkhofer went back again the next day, but the child was dead.
