Grave of Fritz Darges

Many here know that the former SS-Obersturmbannführer Fritz Darges died last month in northern Germany. He earned the Ritterkreuz in 1945 as the commander of SS-Panzer Regiment "Wiking". I was introduced to Fritz Darges in 1997 at a Treffen of the SS-Panzer Regiment "Wiking" and I found him to be a very pleasant man to speak with. Last week I received the article from the German press below from a friend in Australia. It is not very positive and takes the tone that an old Nazi got what he deserved, an unmarked grave with only a few attending his funeral. The reporting is not even factual as some basic research would have revealed that Fritz Darges was not the last SS adjutant of Hitler's, it was Otto Günsche. But that is typical of the reporting in Germany these days .

Er war unbelehrbar. Er saß im Rollstuhl und schwärmte bis zum Schluss vom „Führer“. Hitlers letzter Adjutant, Fritz Darges (†  96)!

Gestern wurde der Alt-Nazi auf dem Celler Stadtfriedhof beigesetzt. Ein anonymes Urnengrab am Rande der Begräbnisstätte – ohne Stein, ohne Kreuz, ohne Kranz.

Um 15.12 Uhr versammelte sich seine zehnköpfige Trauergemeinde vor dem ausgehobenen Erdloch. Der Herbstwind fegte über den fast menschenleeren Friedhof. Vorsichtig ließen Freunde und Angehörige die Urne in die Erde gleiten. Eine grauhaarige Frau warf einige Blütenblätter in die Grube, bekreuzigte sich. Ein älterer Mann im schwarzen Anzug ließ eine handvoll Sand auf die Urne rieseln, verharrte kurz am Grab. Um 15.18 Uhr verließen die Trauernden den Friedhof fast wortlos.

Fritz Darges verstarb am 25. Oktober in seinem Celler Haus. Er wurde am 8. Februar 1913 in Dülsberg (Altmark) geboren, trat am 1. April 1933 in die SS ein (SS-Nr. 72222). Am 21. Oktober 1940 wurde er persönlicher Adjutant von Hitler.

Außerdem gehörte er der gefürchteten SS-Panzer-Division Wiking an. Als BILD ihn kurz vor seinem Tod in seinem Wohnhaus aufsuchte, sagte er: „Ich war für das Tagesprogramm des Führers zuständig. Ich musste immer für ihn da sein.“

Nach dem Krieg lebte er als Autoverkäufer in seiner Heimatstadt Celle.

It would appear that Bild has removed the photo from their article. No doubt this will be to prevent anyone thrying to identify the grave too easily.

Thank you John, for starting this thread.
That is exactly why it is so important that there are people like you, Marc, and Jason, just to name a few, around to keep the historical 'facts"(sic) in balance.
Only a few more years, and all of us who were there, will be gone, it's up to you to keep the truth going, for better or worse.
It's getting lonely in the ranks.
