16th Luftwaffe field division

Post by joshwri »

Hello there im a battle re-enactor and i re-enact the 16th Luftwaffe field division, i know that they were based in Normandy but after D day were they disbanded and sent off to different units. Also if they were sent off to different units is it possible some soldiers went to the Mediterranean front?

thanks

Josh, I would doubt it as the personnel were distributed amongst divisions in Normandy and those not used in that way were used to form a new 16 Infanterie Division in France.

Off the top of my head, elements of the division were sent to 21st Panzer, and the rest were sent to 158th Reserve division when it transformed into the 16th infantry division. It may be possible that the pioneer btl. remained an independent unit.
