352nd Infantry Division in Normandy 1944

Post by Big Al »

Hi There,
I am new to the site, and I am currently looking for as much information that I can currently get about this Division. I know it was formed in Normandy December 43 and by July 44 had become non effective as a fighting unit, reconstituted as a Volksturm Unit at a later date. Information seems rather sketchy so I would appreciate any assistance and links to point me in the right direction.
Thanks in appreciation.

Al,

Not a Volkssturm but a Volksgrenadier-Division. That's a very big difference.

There are a few personal accounts from 352nd landsers in my book, almost solely from D-Day, chiefly Hein Severloh and Franz Gockel.

If you're looking more for OOBs and the like, Zettlering's book on Normandy is indispensable.

I'll send you a first class link when I get home tonight. For now I'd recommend Feldgrau.com. Look under infantry units.

Ziegelmann's book? He was the Chief-of-Staff of 352? I'm not aware of a book, but he wrote an MS for the US Army post-war. From memory there's a copy of it in David Isby's book.

I was led to believe it was a book the Zeiglemann wrote, but if it was an MS then I still need to obtain a copy in some form (English peffered). I am also trying to establish the actions that they took place in during the fighting withdrawal from Omaha Beach till the eventually became non effective as a fighting unit in the Normandy Campaign. The Division suffered heavy casualties between Omaha and the battle for St Lo and were still fighting back through the Falaise Gap but only ellements were involved at this stage. But what were the main actions they were involved in?
By the way thanks to everyone that has supplied so much useful information and I hope there is more to follow.

Hi Guy's
Once again I find myself seeking help from our enlightened members, My research into the 352nd ID and the 352nd Volks Grenadiers is going quite well. However the 352nd I have found was formed fron the disbanded 321st ID I am now looking for any information with regards to this unit and so far all I have is it belonged to LV! Pz Corps which was part of 4th Armee Army Group Centre at Kursk can anyone help or point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Can anyone throw some light on this please. Having possed a question about the 352nd ID during Operation Market Garden i was informed that it was not in any of the OoBs however I was sent the following:-

Died 17 Sep 44- Ogfr Johann Schramer - Div Fus Btl 352 Renkum
Died 04 Oct 44 - Uffz Peter Schumacher - 3/Art Rgt 352 Arnheim

And an answer to this one would be appreciated:-
Died 22 Sep 44 - Gefr Hein Kluge 6 (352)/ Art Rgt 191 Oosterbeek
Died 12 Oct 44 - Ogfr Peter Dehling 4 (352)/Art Rgt 191 Arnheim

The first two were definitely 352nd but what significanse is the 352 before the 191 could they have been on attatchment? and part of a Kampfgruppe.
Please Help with this if you can I am hoping to write a book about the Divisions History. Thanks in anticipation.

Hi,

I have a thought on that. I think... for what's that worth, that those men killed were stragglers, or the units they belonged too were. The german retreat was brought to a hold around that time.

Yesterday I've read a book about the 277. Inf.Div.
Elements of that division retreated through Belgium into Holland over Brussels-Turnhout-Tilburg-'s Hertogenbosch, crossing the rivers and trying to retreat to Germany. This all happened days before the allies launched Market-Garden.
The elements from the 277. were horsedrawn, so faster than infanterie.

Well, does that make sense?
