Security units in France 1941-1944

Post by Loïc B. »

Hello Feldgrauians !

Could someone tell me whether a list of these units exist ?
I'm looking for the Sicherungs Regimenter and - more difficult - the Landesschützen Bataillone, if possible with their period of presence in France.

I found yet the following ones :
- Sicherungs Regimenter 1, 5, 6 and 190 (325. Sicherungs Division, after August 1942 at least).
- Sicherungs Regimenter 191, 194, 197 and 199 or battalions of these regiments (formed in February 1943 from Landesschützen Bataillone ?).
- Landesschützen Bataillone 210, 378*, 392*, 402, 428, 454, 577*, 605, 654*, 685, 690, 722, 906* and 907, Landesschützen Bataillon zur besonderen Verwendungs 527.

* The whole or parts of them were used to form the Sicherungs Regiment 191 on February 10th 1943.

Another source told me that there were also the following : Sicherungs Regimenter 95, 192, 196, 198 and 200.

In any case, any information concerning the Landesschützen or the Sicherungs units in France at this time would be useful.

Thanks for your help,
Regards,

Loïc

Loïc,

The following might be of interest:
http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gli ... /Index.htm

Here is an outline of the records available at the Bundesarchiv in Freiburg in respect to Landesschützen/Sicherungs-Bataillone.

Record ID: RH 38

Landesschützen-Btl. in France

Post by Jason Long »

Loïc,
I have some OBs from the Geheimentagesberichten that cover the deployments of the LS-Btl. in France that I can probably post for several dates if you're interested. But what exactly are you interested in?

Wow ! Thank you Christian and Jason, I completely forgot that I had posted about this topic !

Christian : unfortunately, my German is really bad... But thanks for the information, I'll try to find a friend who can translate your text.

Jason : I'm looking for the numbers of the Sicherungs Regimenter and Landesschützen Bataillone deployed in France 1940-1944. The dates I'm interested in are the whole in this period ;) But particularly June 1941, December 1941, May 1942, November 1942, July 1943 and June 1944.
Anyway, I'll take everything you have if I can :D

Thanks for your help,
Very best regards,

Loïc

Hmm, they're not in the folder where they're supposed to be. I'll try to clean off my desk to hunt for them. So expect some delays.

Thanks a lot, Jason, it fits perfectly with my research.
An answer at your question concerning Tessin : I don't have any access to his books, so I can't check in. It's a pity, because I'm sure that I could find a lot of things concerning the 190-serie of the Sicherungs Regimenter.

Another question : what is the process to build a Landesschützen Regiment ? Because if I count well, the Lds. Rgt. 56 had 25 battalions ! A lot more than an usual regiment, isn't it ?

Thanks again for your help !
All the best,

Loïc

LS-Rgt. in France

Post by Jason Long »

Loïc,
Yes, in more normal circumstances a LS/Sich.-Rgt. controlled 1-5 security units. I can only suppose that the German did things this way in France because of the low threat that they faced there.

Here are extracts from Tessin for Sich-Rgt. 190-194 (I'll do the others later):
Sicherungs-Rgt. Stab 190
1 Feb 43 Stab formed in Paris from Stab Sich.Rgt. von Cleve
21 Feb 43 LS-Btl. 341, 425, 541, and 629 assigned; later 341. LS-Btl. relieved of assignment and remaining battalions redesignated as I.-III. Subordinated to 325. Sicherungs Division
Aug 44 destroyed in Paris

Sicherungs-Rgt. Stab 191
1 Feb 43 formed in Northwestern France from LS-Btl. 906 (Sissone), 378 (Charleville), 392 (Clermont), 577 (Amiens) as I.-IV. and 4./LS-Btl. 654 as 13.
Nov 43 I./ sent to the East
1944 Stab Laon, II. Charleville, III. Quimper, IV. Amiens
Jun 44 I./ destroyed at Minsk and Vitebsk
4 Oct 44 disbanded after being destroyed in France

Sicherungs-Rgt. Stab 192
1 Feb 43 Stab formed in Orleans from Stab Sich.Rgt. Orleans
15 Feb 43 LS-Btl. 630 (Orleans), 628 (Melun), 457 (Blois), 421 (Bourges) as I.-IV., 2./LS-Btl. 457 as 13. and 2./421 as 14.
1 Nov 43 I./ tranferred to the East
1944 IV. in Carches
May 44 I./ redesignated as I./Sich.Rgt. 57
Dec 44 disbanded after being destroyed in France

Sicherungs-Rgt. Stab 193
15 Feb 43 formed from LS-Btl. 919 (Alençon), 951 (St. Lô), 451 (Chartres), 467 (Caen) as I.-IV., 4./LS-Btl. 451 as 13. and 4./467 as 14.
1944 I. Calais, II. St. Lô, III. (Evreux), IV. (Laigle)
Summer 44 destroyed in France
1945 remains of III./ in Godesberg and IV. in Oldenzaal

Sicherungs-Rgt. Stab 194
28 Jan 43 Stab formed in Nantes from Stab Sich.Rgt. 2
15 Feb 43 LS-Btl. 428 (Bordeaux), 279 (Vannes), 744 (Nantes), 658 (Nantes) as I.-IV., 4./LS-Btl. 658 as 13. and 1./644 as 14.

Hi Jason! Any chance you might have more for Sich.-Rgt. 195-199? I know that II./195 was in the Cotentin and that Rgt. 199 was in the south, but the rest is a mystery (okay, so I don't have the time to run to the LOC to consult Tessin :D ). Anything might help, I'm trying to nail down the LS units circa 6 June 1944.

Hi Jason,

Is that a typo for Sich.-Rgt. 199? Also it is curious, since I have fragmentary info that says that III./Sich.-Regt. 199 was formed from Ls.-Btl. 654 at Troyes and that was what later was called Sich.-Btl. 199? As usual just a bit odd.

Thanks for the info.
