Tour of Poland, Goldap to Gdansk

I am interested in tracing the steps of my Grandfather in Jan/Feb 1945 from the Goldap area, west toward the sea. He was killed in the area of (now) Lelkowo and Kandyty in mid February 1945.
Is there anyone in the area that knows the history of the retreat in this area? I would like to find a guide that can show me the area and explain the history. I am planning a trip in Sept.2010.
