Hello to all ; the idea od this thread is to summarize the arrival of German tanks in the theater, the first were those of the PR 5 ........................... ....

The Panzer Regiment 5 in Tripoli - March 12, 1941.

By March 10, 1941 the armored regiment landed in Tripoli with a force of 25 Pz Kw I, 45 Pz Kw II, 61 Pz Kw III, 17 Pz Kw IV and 7 Panzerbefehlswagen, from where it departed towards the front on March 12, 1941.

Lets look at that initial allocation in a bit more detail.

The 25x PzKpfw I were all Ausf A
The 45x PzKpfw II were all Ausf C
The 61x PzKpfw III were I believe Ausf G. But I'm not clear on the exact differences between a 5cm armed Ausf F and an Ausf G, so I am happy to stand corrected.
The 17x PzKpfw IV were probably all Ausf D. Again I'm not clear on the difference between Ausf D and Ausf E. In addition to which there were also I believe hybrid Ausf D/E in very small numbers, at some point in 1941.
The 7x Panzer Befehlswagen were 3x Kl & 4x Gr.

The Anti-tank Battalion (27 vehicles strong), was detached to the Afrika Korps, operating in Libya, arriving in Tripoli on 18-21 of March, 1941.

The Panzer Regiment 5 in Tripoli.

On February 15, 1941, the regiment was subordinated under the 5th Light Division. When embarking the tanks for Africa a fire occurred in the ship "Leverkusen", which resulted in the loss of 10 Panzer III and 3 Panzer IV. Until March 10, 1941 the rest of the regiment landed without other novelties....................

The Panzer Regiment 8 towards Libya 1941.

On March 15, 1941, the PR 8 was detached from the 10. Pz and subordinated to the 15. Pz. On March 25, 1941, Oberst Elster handed over the command of the regiment to Oberstleutnant Hans Cramer, former commander of the Panzer-Aufklärungs-Lehr-Abteilung. During the period from March 26 to April 10, 1941, final preparations were made to march to the Libyan theater of operations. On April 11, the I. Abteilung was entrained in Schwetzingen, for the railway transport by the Brennero - Florence - Rome - port of Naples. From here, the regiment will arrive to Africa by ship in 3 convoys.

The ships of the convoy were: "Leverkusen", "Rialto", "Ankara", "Burma", "Gritti","Kybfels", "Poscarini" and "Venario". On the night of 13 to 14 April 1941, the first train arrived in Naples. When the 1. Company was already loaded, it had to be unloaded again to replace the anthracite paint by the camouflage of the desert. The cargo on the "Leverkusen" was completed on 22 April 1941 and the crossing was made by Sicily, with mooring in the port of Palermo, then passing the Island of Pantelleria and the Pelagic Islands. The transport was covered by sea and with aerial surveillance. The "Rialto" and two other transports were retained in Messina by submarine threat and then reached Tripoli with 8 days of delay. The HQ of the I. Abteilung with the 1. Company arrived in Africa on April 24, 1941. The HQ of the regiment with HQ Coy, 2nd, 3rd and 5th Company were landed on May 5, 1941 in Tripoli, while HQ of the II. Abteilung, the 6th and 7th Companies arrived in Tripoli on May 6, 1941 .................

Hello Dave ; thanks for joining . AFAIK the PR 5 had the standard three figures numbering system, but the PR 8 had only one (I think the company within the regiment). Any other point of view?. Cheers. Raúl M .
