Hello to all :D; a new topic here...................

Fire Support in Labunie - Sep 1939.

The II. / Art Regt 43 was subordinate to the VII AK during the Polish campaign in September 1939 and was organized with three batteries, one of them with guns sK 18 10.0 cm (4. / AR 43) and two with howitzers sFH 18 (5. & 6. / AR 43).

In turn the II. / AR 63 was also assigned to the VII AK during the same campaign and was organized in the same way as the previous group. Both were motorized.

On the morning of September 21, 1939 the division (27. ID?) was marching towards the Vistula, when a report stating the Light Division had been attacked by strong enemy coming from the east, was received.

The III. Battalion of the Regiment was detached due north with the mission to progress through the wooded area northeast of Labunie. Soon the enemy could be seen astride the road and the whole regiment went to the attack. As on a parade ground, the battalions advanced towards Barchaczow supported by artillery and infantry guns; meanwhile our Flak also fired on the city, which caught fire.

The 6. Company with support of an Flak battery of 20 mm assaulted and conquered the eastern edge of Barchaczow. But despite winning another 200 meters was soon stopped by machine-gun fire, the officer in charge was wounded and two NCOs were killed.

Until the Regiment's HQ came the report that the enemy attacked from the north and east; the flank and rear of the III. Battalion was threatened, the leader of the 9. Company fell at its front. The regimental commander issued the order to entrench themselves in the positions reached.

The enemy had passed through the gap between the two German divisions in Krasnobrod and was moving toward the southwest. On the morning of September 22, 1939 the batteries opened fire on Polish positions in the woods. In front of Labunie were lying our dead comrades, the wounded were finished off at night by the Poles.

Heavy artillery of the VII. AK joined the fight after marching 75 kms in four hours coming from the line of demarcation.

Order of attack, the Army Corps must attack on September 23, 1939 jumping out from the Zamosc line to the southeast in order to destroy the opponent, time of attack 08:00 hours. At 06:00 hours the enemy situation is still unknown; the artillery must run harassment fire on Polish positions. For the story of a Polish officer of Ukrainian origin are known that around three Polish divisions were seeking the rupture.

The attack began and had good progress, but north of Zamosc the enemy resistance is still strong. The heavy artillery fire hit the depth of the adversary deployment. Soon the ammunition was running out, but suddenly over our heads appeared flying large transport machines, the Ju-52 that supply the gunners.

Soon the night fell and along the front, from Zamosc up to Tomaszow, burning towns and villages could be seen. The Polish forces retreated pursued by the artillery fire which increases hourly. The division had accomplished its mission and the gap had been closed.
