Final Position of I./Pz.Rgt 24

Hi Guys

I am trying to find out where I./Pz Rgt 24 finished up in May 45. From the net and books the best I can do so far is their attachment to 6 PD at the start of "Fruhlingserwachen" on 6 March 45.

Any help appreciated

It was subordinated to III.Pz.Korps, AOK 6 from 15.04.45- 08.05.45

Also do you or anyone else know whether the remnants of I./Pz Rgt 24 were captured by the russians or did they manage to surrender to the americans?

Tried some searches but have gotten nowhere. After mid March 45 there seems to be very little info on the actions of I./Pz Rgt 24. Does anybody have any locations of I./Pz Rgt 24 after mid March?

Martin,

I would be nowhere with Panther units if not for you. I am trying to nail down the identity of a Panther that has been for a long time listed as "unknown unit". I beleive it is I./Pz Rgt 24 but need to be sure that I.PR 24 still had some panthers left when they surrendered to the Americans or that where they abandoned their last Panthers was in an American sector. If not then it is not I.PR 24. Not asking for much am I.

according to the regimental history the I./Pz.Rgt. 24 blew up its last few Panthers (don't know exactly how many) on the northern outskirts of Lietzen (a small town some 100 km southeast of Salzburg) during the late afternoon of May 9, 1945. Lietzen lies just north of the river Enns which was the demarkation line between the Russians (to the north) and the Americans (to the south). The personnel of the Abteilung then crossed the Enns into the American sector and continued with cars, trucks, and a single 18 to Zgkw. towards Radstadt, which was reached on the late afternoon/early evening of May 10, 1945

thats of great help and what I needed. That puts them at least in range of an American inspection team. I now need to go see if any other Panther units surrendered in the same area to see if they would have been gathered up in a collection park. If they were not then it raises more issues that need a plausible explanation.
