Truppenkennzeichen 1. Infanterie-Division

Post by Paulus II »

Hi all,

There are many reproductions of this emblem to be found in books and on the net but they are all quite different from each other. I take the differences in the lower half of the shield (rounded or pointed) and the crown on top (three or four blocks/points) as variations that occured over time and in different units belonging to the division. No problem there I guess.

But........some show the black quarters of the shield in the upperright and lowerleft quadrants while others have this the other way around.

I understand the colours used represented the colours of the Prussian flag and I've found some examples of Prussian coats of arms that show the black quarters to be in the upperright and lowerleft quarters and the coat of arms of the Hohenzollerns that have them the other way around.

Which is correct for the Truppenkennzeichen of 1. Infanterie-Division?
Or were both variations used? (that does strike me as quite odd though)

Any help (preferably in the form of pictures showing the emblem on vehicles) will be much appreciated.

thanks in advance,
best regards,

Paul
