Military etiquette.

Post by Reg Jones »

Can anyone tell me how the normal soldiers addressed their superiors?
Did they use any special phrasing when it came to giving an official report or when answering a question?
Something along the lines of, "The private begs to report" etc etc.?
Or was it a lot looser than how I envisage it?
Thanks for any answers that help me.
Reg :-)

Reg,

according to German Military Courtesy the sub-ordinate has to address his superior with "Herr Oberleutnant; Herr Feldwebel".

In following proper military courtesy, he must be in attention facing the superior!

In reporting to his superior he will report: " Gefreiter Dosenkohl meldet sich wie befohlen, Herr Hauptmann".

The Waffen SS was something different. As my late father-in-law tried to test my knowledge of military history, he told me one's that the had to report to their Spiess = 1st Sgt, in addressing him "Hauptscharführer". In the Waffen SS the "Herr" was not allowed. As I assume it, the Waffen SS wanted to show that their organisation was something new and not affiliatetd with the bourgeoise old feudal system of the old Prússioan dominated German Empire.

Regards

Hank
