Hello to all :D; more on the 1. Gebirgs Division..................

The 1 GD on the Eastern Front.

On July 16 1941, started the break-through across the so called “Stalin Line”. Going through mud and swamps the motorcyclist went ahead; the objective should be reached.

The 1. GD managed to break through the „Stalin-Linie", a well prepared Russian line of bunkers, field fortifications and anti-tank ditches.

The breakthrough of the „Stalin-Linie“ cost 105 casualties in the two days of combat (15 and 16 Jul):

- 5 officers dead, 4 wounded
- 26 Oberjäger (NCO’s) and Jäger dead, 70 wounded.

About 1000 Russian soldiers lost their lives and 286 were captured during the defense of the „Stalin-Linie“ against the 1. GD. 100 machine guns, 8 artillery pieces, 1 tank and 3 aircraft were captured by the „Edelweissdivision“.

The 1 GD on the Eastern Front.

From July 20 till Aug 07 1941. Pursuit and encirclement to Podwissokoje.

On July 18 of 1941 at dusk, the division captured both bridges in the city of Vinnitsa and cut the route of retreat of the Russian forces located to the west of the Bug River. Nevertheless, the German forces were then too weak and many enemy units escaped of the encirclement. The regiment had to defend itself against strong counterattacks, but it held his position. After the battle of Vinnitsa, the German troops started the pursuit towards Umán.

On July 21 1941, the 1 GD started the pursuit heading southeastwards

The Russian troops withdrew while fighting towards the depth of Russia (to the east). On August 02 of 1941, the regiment had managed to establish the connection with the 9 Pz and the 4 GD in Ternovka. There were intense combats with the encircled Russian forces in Podwyssokoje in which there were several attempts of rupture on the part of the surrounded troops. The battle lasted until the 7 Until August of 1941.

At 13:00 hours it was observed German tanks on the enemy flank north and East of Ternowka. The Russian left the town in mass, hence were taken by flanking fire unleashed by the I./ GJR 98 and II./ GAR 79 suffering great number of casualties.

Hello to all :D; more on the 1. Gebirgs Division..................

The 1 GD on the Eastern Front.

To Berislav by the Dniepr River.

After some days of resting, the advance was resumed towards the Donets River, and on August 13 of 1941, the II. /GAR 79 continued its march to Berislav as part of the Battle Group Picker, following the course of the Ssinjucha River.

Image
The Ssinjucha River.

On Aug 15 1941, Day after Day, from one town to another the troops went ahead almost 40 kilometers daily throughout endless corn fields.

After more or less intense fights in the neighborhood of Vladimirovka the Dniéper River was reached at last.

On September 03 of 1941 during the night, the mountain pioneers managed to construct a bridge on the Dnieper River at Berislav and during the night on September 09 of 1941, the Division crossed the river by this bridge towards the bridgehead that had settled down on the far river bank.

March in the steppe.

Image

On Sep 10 1941 it was detected (from here) several enemy Light armored vehicles south of the march route; a gun Platoon belonging to the 5./ GAR 79 was placed immediately and according to Group Commander’s orders opened up on them.

On Sep 11 1941, an enemy motorized column was detected while retreating from Kontantinowka; it was engaged and destroyed.

The situation: the enemy put strong resistance on the right flank counterattacking against Antonowka. The division deployed to the right got the bulk of the blow. The 1 GD advanced from the area of Kontantinowka – Tschitintschi and heading southwest held the enemy at and around Dimitriewka. According to one Divisional order an infantry company was to reconnoiter northwards being entrusted with the task the Oberleutnant v. Hirschfeld’s subunit reinforced with a howitzers’ platoon of the 4./ GAR 79 under Oberleutnant Lommer. Fulfilling this task were captured the towns of Blagowetschenko and Alexandrowka.

However, the Kampfgruppe v. Hirschfeld was surrounded at Alexandrowka and all night long and in the morning rejected the Russian attacks; the platoon of 4./ GAR 79 consumed all its ammunition during those fights till the Kampfgruppe could be released by German forces in battalion strength.

March in the steppe.

On September 13 0f 1941 the regiment advanced by Antonovka in the Nogaica steppe. On September 16 of 1941 at 03:45 hours, a messenger of the 5. Battery informed that it had been overrun by the Russians; later Leutnant Schnerr arrived at Alexandrowka, with the remnants of the 5. Battery’s crew. The Group’s Commander immediately took contact with the II. /GJR 98 asking to attack towards Sofiewka in order to get back the howitzers.

Image
Advancing through the steppe.....................

The attack began at 05:00 hours and by 06:30 hours the Chief of the 5. Battery informed that he had got the lost pieces. An intense combat took place in the South part of the locality where the Russians under control of their commissars went back step by step from one position to another until the last resistance was broken. Here the Advanced Observer of the battery, Oberleutnant Schmidt fell by a shot in his head.

The 1 GD on the Eastern Front.

The anti-tank ditch of Timoschewka.

On September 19 of 1941, the II. /GAR 79 advanced at dawn in the direction of Tarasowka when it was reported about the presence of strong enemy in the antitank ditches located in front of Timoschewka, before which the battery took position in the place ready to fire.

Image

On September 20 of 1941 it was received the order to attack the antitank ditch, which was strongly defended. The regiment managed to penetrate and to break the Russian lines, so that the march in direction to the south-east could be reinitiated.

Image

The wounded were bandaged within the firing position of the 4. Battery. The attack of the gebirgsjägern with artillery support met strong resistance and progressed slowly. The Soviets responded with artillery fire of heavy caliber
