5th Panzer Division 1939 question?

Post by smitty22 »

Can anyone provide me what division insignia or emblem the 5th Panzer division might have used in the invasion of Poland? If you have an image or link to an image you can post I would greatly appreciate it.

Try here...

I believe the first symbol shown was used from 1939 to 1941.

Thank you for your reply hucks216. However it was my understanding that the "Y with dot" symbol was not used until after the Polish invasion. Do you have any information about that?

Hello smitty22 !

According to a book on german Truppenkennzeichen by Schmitz and Thies, the 5th PzD had no standard emblem
for all units during the campaign in Poland. However, the 15th and 31st Pz.Rgt. both had the turret-insignia shown below,
on both sides and the back of the turrett, to discern the two units. The emblem resembles the tactical sign for a tank unit
and was painted in white (somtimes yellow). In case of the 31st Pz.Rgt. it had a black beam in the middle.

I hope this helps, :D
best regards,

hero.
